NORMAN — Lincoln Riley's defensive staff continues to take shape with Tuesday's hiring of UCLA's Roy Manning as the Sooners' cornerbacks coach.Manning spent last season as UCLA's outside linebackers and special teams coach.Manning worked with Sooners defensive coordinator Alex Grinch at Washington State during the 2015-17 seasons, serving as the Cougars' outside linebackers coach."Roy has proven to be one of the most dynamic recruiters in the country," Riley said in a release. "He's got excellent experience at several great football programs, and has strong recruiting ties all over the place," commented Riley. "He's coached multiple positions, has coached on both sides of the ball and has been a special teams coordinator." For four seasons as coach at Truman State, Chris Foster got a look at the coach he eventually would succeed and the program that coach oversaw for 52 years.Foster’s teams beat McKendree and coach Harry Statham four times in as many tries during that time and finished above the Bearcats every season in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.Yet, when the legendary Statham was not retained by McKendree after the season, Foster saw a great opportunity, awkward though it might be.He landed the job and took over for someone who departed unwillingly after posting more wins at a four-year college than any men’s or women’s coach in history with 1,122.
