Herbergers, the local department stores that were as uptown as many small towns could get, is closing. Wyoming had only one of the 260 Herbergers operating, and that one was in Rock Springs, where it helped anchor the White Mountain Mall. But Herbergers had a presence in every state surrounding Wyoming, so most Wyomingites who have received wedding or graduation gifts during the past several decades probably got at least something from Herbergers.Herberger’s parent company, Bon-Ton, which also owns Carsons, Younkers, Elder-Beerman, Bergner’s and Boston Stores is the largest retailer to file for bankruptcy this year, which it did in February. The deal is expected to be approved in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware … [Read more...] about Herbergers to close all stores within 12 weeks
Another retailer bites the dust. Bon-Ton's storefront in the Brick Plaza. (Google Maps) Department store Bon-Ton, which operates 250 locations nationwide, announced it will liquidate all U.S. stores after a bid for the company's assets was accepted in bankruptcy proceedings yesterday. Bon-Ton has two N.J. locations in Brick (80 Brick Plaza) and Phillipsburg (1200 Highway 22 East). It's the latest victim in a string of retail chains announcing total liquidations (Toys 'R' Us) or significant store closures (J.C. Penney's and Macy's, just to name a few) as the brick-and-mortar stores compete with the internet and Amazon. Bon-Ton's operations also include nine furniture galleries and stores under the Bon-Ton, Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson's, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's and Younkers nameplates. The stores sells clothing and accessories for women, men and children, as well as cosmetics and home furnishings. … [Read more...] about Retail apocalypse claims another victim: Bon-Ton closing all stores, including these in N.J.
While Target is doubling down on stores, the Minneapolis-based retailer also has decided to pull the plug on a dozen underperforming stores. The company on Monday began notifying store employees at the 12 affected stores, which are slated to close on Feb. 3. In the Twin Cities metro area, the store in Hastings is being closed. Fergus Falls in western Minnesota also is on the list. “It’s not a decision we make lightly,” said Kristy Welker, a Target spokeswoman. “We have a really rigorous process in place in evaluating the performance of a store in deciding when to close or relocate a store. We close a store after seeing several years of decreasing profitability.” While many big retailers such as Macy’s, J.C. Penney and Sears have been closing many stores to retool their business for the digital age, Target has been closing a handful a year while focusing on opening new smaller-format stores in urban and dense suburban areas. It has accelerated its … [Read more...] about Target is closing 12 stores, including Hastings and Fergus Falls
