NEW YORK (AP) — The company planning to buy Donald Trump’s new social media business disclosed Monday that it has received subpoenas from a grand jury in New York. Shares of Digital World Acquisition Corp. dropped 7% in morning trading Monday as the company reported that the subpoenas and related investigations by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission could delay its acquisition of the maker of Trump's Truth Social app. Trump’s social media venture launched in February as he seeks a new digital stage to rally his supporters and fight Big Tech limits on speech, a year after he was banned from Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The Trump Media & Technology Group — which operates the app and was in the process of being acquired by “blank-check” firm Digital World — said in a statement that it will cooperate with "oversight that supports the SEC’s important mission of protecting retail investors.” Digital World said in a regulatory filing Monday … [Read more...] about Company buying Trump’s social media app faces subpoenas

She Was WWE’s First Female Referee. She Says Vince McMahon Raped Her.
Rita Chatterton (center) said Vince McMahon told her that if she “wanted a half-a-million-dollar-a-year contract,” she would have “to satisfy him.” Photo: Courtesy the International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame On August 28, 2021, Rita Chatterton, a sandy-haired 64-year-old woman, stood at a podium in Albany to receive a “Trailblazer Award” from the International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was the brainchild of a wrestling fan named Seth Turner, who wanted to honor Chatterton for being the World Wrestling Federation’s first female referee. “Seth calls me and says, ‘Rita, I need you to do the Hall of Fame with me,’” Chatterton recalls. At first she refused; she didn’t want to revisit her time with the WWF, now known as WWE. But Turner finally convinced her, and she was ultimately glad she did it. “I always said I don’t want to live and die and be forgotten,” she told him. Chatterton has been forgotten before. A short distance from Wimbledon, players struggle and strive to qualify for the main draw
Roehampton, London (CNN) It's unmistakably a scene from the British summer: across a stretch of green, well-kept courts, tennis players shoot balls over the net as spectators -- some seated, some sprawled on grass banks -- watch on in the lazy afternoon heat. This is Wimbledon -- the third grand slam tournament of the calendar year -- but the venue and the competitors are not quite as most know it. At this tennis club, the crowds are smaller, the cheers quieter, and the courts packed closer together than at the All England Club three miles away. While the Wimbledon main draw may not get underway until next week, for more than 250 players the journey to get there has already begun. The four-day qualification tournament in the London district of Roehampton can be a golden ticket for the Wimbledon main stage -- a place at which some players have dreamed of competing their whole careers. "I haven't actually been to the main set at Wimbledon since my … [Read more...] about A short distance from Wimbledon, players struggle and strive to qualify for the main draw

Families brace for changes to pandemic-era free school meals
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 ESSEX, Vt. (AP) — Before the pandemic, there was no room in the budget for Kate Murphy’s children to buy lunch at school. She and her husband would buy in bulk and make bag lunches at home. So the free school meals that were made available to students nationwide amid the crisis have brought welcome relief, especially since her husband lost his job last year at a bakery company that closed. The free meals gave the Essex Junction, Vermont, family one less thing to worry about. “We make just too much money (literally by just a few dollars) to qualify for free or reduced lunches and other food-related benefits, but not enough to truly ever feel financially comfortable,” Murphy, a mother of four and administrator at a trust company, said by email. The pandemic-era federal aid that made school meals available for free to all public school students — … [Read more...] about Families brace for changes to pandemic-era free school meals

Omar Kelly: Where does Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa rank among NFL starting QBs?
The next generation of quarterbacks is coming. And some — like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen — have already arrived, becoming the marquee players of today’s NFL. And there are quite a few who are blossoming before our eyes. Eight of the league’s top-12 quarterbacks now reside in the AFC, which should indicate how tough that conference will be this year. That means quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa need to step up, or get left behind. If Tagovailoa doesn’t move into the top third of NFL starting quarterbacks in the next season or two, the Miami Dolphins will have wasted their time on yet another average starting quarterback. Here’s a ranking of all 32 starting QBs in the league: NFL Elites — Put these quarterbacks on any team and they are likely advancing to the postseason. 1.
