Chris Christie just can't seem to catch a break. Among the GOP's most promising potential 2016 candidates, Christie has seen his presidential thunder stolen in recent weeks by some other rising stars in the party. And now comes a poll from Quinnipiac University showing the New Jersey governor with the lowest job approval ratings of his tenure. Only 38 percent of voters said they approve of Christie's performance in the poll released Monday. Fifty-six percent said they disapprove. Sixty-five percent of New Jersey voters said he would not be a good president, and 64 percent suggested he shouldn't even launch a bid. Christie hasn't formally declared anything - he's said he'll decide one way or another this summer - but 55 percent of voters said the presidential race is distracting him from his day job. Seventy percent said he should resign if he does ultimately run for president. "The governor's job approval hits a new low and voters think his presidential ambitions are distracting him … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Chris Christie’s approval rating in New Jersey at record low, poll finds
After a big loss in New Hampshire, Hillary Clinton is depending on her closest allies to galvanize support - among them, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey. Booker, who has been front-and-center for Clinton in the early primary states, said the results did not take him by surprise and that Clinton herself had expected a "hard-fought campaign." "We knew that Vermont is Bernie [Sander]'s state, so New Hampshire is his backyard and that she was going to have a tough time. It would be a real stretch to win that," Booker told "CBS This Morning" Friday. "But now we're going into a very diverse part of our nation where the Democratic base is really represented in every element and I think she's going to be strong." Still, a CBS News poll found a huge gap between Clinton and Sanders' appeal to voters under age 30. Clinton trailed Sanders among that demographic by 67 percent in New Hampshire and 70 points in Iowa. Booker responded to the numbers, calling them a "reaffirmation" that the race to … [Read more...] about Sen. Cory Booker on endorsing Hillary Clinton, new book

Chris Christie shocked the political world on Friday when he announced that he's endorsing Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race."I am proud to be here to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States," Christie said at a Trump press conference in Fort Worth, Texas just days before 13 states hold primaries or caucuses on Super Tuesday next week.Christie said his family and Trump's family have been friends "for over a decade" and said there's "no one who is better prepared" to be commander-in-chief than Trump."The best person to beat Hillary Clinton in November on that stage last night is undoubtedly Donald Trump," Christie told reporters. The New Jersey governor, who dropped out of the 2016 presidential race after New Hampshire's GOP primary earlier this month, said that Trump is a "strong and resolute leader" who can take on the D.C. establishment and will "lead the Republican Party to victory."Christie, whose … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo New Jersey Gov. Democrat Phil Murphy was elected governor of New Jersey with strong support from his party's base, including women, younger voters, and by making inroads with some less traditionally Democratic groups, such as independents and white voters. Murphy defeated the state's lieutenant governor, Republican Kim Guadagno, who was hurt by her association with current Governor Chris Christie, CBS News exit polling shows. The Christie factor Guadagno attacked Murphy during the campaign for his work at the Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs, but it was, in fact, her connection to Chris Christie, which Murphy consistently reminded voters of, that resonated more negatively with voters. Christie gets into heated exchange with disgruntled voter Half of New Jersey voters say Guadagno's ties to the now-unpopular Christie made them think worse of her. Roughly eight in 10 of voters who went to the polls today disapprove of the job Christie is doing as governor. Demographic groups Murphy won … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo How did Democrat Phil Murphy win the New Jersey gubernatorial race?
