By James Davey and Ben Martin LONDON (Reuters) - Sainsbury's and Walmart's Asda are in talks to create Britain's biggest supermarket group, overtaking Tesco by market share in a combination of their UK businesses worth up to 15 billion pounds ($20.7 billion). Sainsbury's confirmed on Saturday that it and Walmart, the world's largest retailer, were in advanced discussions regarding a combination of the Sainsbury's and Asda businesses and would make a further announcement at 0600 GMT on Monday. It gave no details of the structure of any deal but a source with knowledge of the situation told Reuters the holding company of the combined group would retain the Sainsbury's name and Sainsbury's Chief Executive Mike Coupe would lead it. The source described the planned deal - which would further consolidate Britain's fiercely contested grocery market and help Walmart address its underperforming UK business - as a "merger". AN Apple reseller has been forced to shut shop after its clearance sale saw 11,000 people descend on its store to nab £40 iPhones. In its ad for the event, the Switch store in Malaysia said it was selling off its stock of demo products, including iPhone models 5S to 7, iPads, Apple TVs, MacBooks, and more – with prices ranging from £18 to £370. Seeking a bargain, Apple fans began queuing outside the store 19 hours before the weekend sale, despite being told by the store in its FAQ that midnight queues would not be permitted. One individual described the chaos as "The Hunger Games" on Twitter. In a separate tweet, a female attendee complained that "there were too many people pushing" at the event. In an attempt to wrest control of the situation, Switch handed out tickets to people at the front of the queue. But, as it … [Read more...] about Apple store forced to close after being swarmed by 11,000 fans trying to buy £40 iPhones

It has been announced the business has gone bust and entered administration — but are there closing down sales and what discounts are available? What and where are the Toys R Us closing down sales? Toys R Us announced it was knocking 25 per cent off its products in its closing down sale. All stock is now subject to clearance discounts and other special promotions across every one of its 106 stores in the UK. But it is unclear which brands remain in stock as some suppliers, including Lego, have taken back products to avoid discounted sales, the Guardian reports. Its products were still listed on the Toys R Us website today. "Customers are encouraged to take advantage of these special offers as soon as possible," said joint-administrator Simon Thomas "While stock levels are generally high, customers may find that the more popular brands begin to sell out over the coming days.” Gift … [Read more...] about When is the Toys R Us closing down sale and which stores are closing?
TWO of the UK's largest retailers on the UK high street have collapsed into administration today - putting 5,500 jobs at risk. Struggling retailers Toys R Us and electrical retailer Maplin were fighting to survive amid tough operating conditions. The two stores are the first high street retailers to go into administration this year, with many other big names closing branches as they struggle to stay afloat. Toys R Us, which employed around 3,000 workers, has been in trouble for some time now, fighting to pay off a £15million VAT bill. Before Christmas it had hoped to have staved-off the threat of administration after reaching a deal with UK's pension lifeboat to plug a £9million blackhole. But at the beginning of February, it was reported the company's American bosses had begun an "urgent search" for a buyer after weak Christmas trading. The toy giant announced this morning that it had appointed administrators, and confirmed that it will be holding closing down … [Read more...] about Maplin and Toys R Us collapse into administration in latest blow to the UK high street
