Around the country, students are now taking preposterously lengthy standardized tests related to the Common Core Standards Initiative. To the chagrin of education bureaucrats, there’s a growing backlash against the test among parents—many of whom are opting their children out of the tests. (RELATED: You won’t believe what happened to this kid’s mom after she knocked Common Core) There’s also a growing backlash against the tests among teachers and school officials at elementary and middle schools. New York State is ground zero for this phenomenon. By the score, teachers and administrators across The Empire State have taken to the internet to vent their frustrations about the ELA, the state’s standardized test in English Language Arts which is specifically designed to align with Common Core. A third-grade teacher writing in Slate only as Anonymous ripped the grueling multi-day test for being a useless exercise in process of elimination that cannot be expected to make sense … [Read more...] about Think Common Core class material is bad? US Government To Cancel Another $6 Billion In Student Loan Debt
(CNN) — The Biden administration has agreed to cancel an estimated $6 billion in federal student loan debt for about 200,000 borrowers who have claimed they were defrauded by their college. The administration had previously approved $25 billion in loan forgiveness for 1.3 million borrowers. Around 43 million Americans have federal student loan debt. READ MORE: Sacramento Mayor Steinberg Calls Supreme Court Ruling Striking Down Roe v. Wade ‘Dark Day For Our Country’ Many of the borrowers affected by the new agreement have been waiting years for the Department of Education to process their claims under a rule known as borrower defense to repayment. It allows borrowers who believe they were misled by their college, often over inflated job placement rates or the ability to transfer credits, to request federal student loan relief. Seven of those borrowers filed a class action lawsuit in 2019 over the department’s handling of the claims. Under former Education Secretary Betsy … [Read more...] about US Government To Cancel Another $6 Billion In Student Loan Debt
A year after condo collapse in Surfside, Florida, survivors focus on healing
SURFSIDE, Fla. — One year after a 12-story condominium tower collapsed , killing 98 people, survivors are grappling with the trauma and grief as they try to heal emotionally and physically. A 15-year-old boy found alive in the rubble is gaining strength from starting a nonprofit group with his father after his mother was killed in the collapse, and a 73-year-old man is returning to his religious roots after he saw divine intervention in the experience. Jonah Handler, now 16, was one of the few people pulled from the rubble alive. His mother, Stacie Fang, 54, was killed. Jonah was home with Fang when the South Tower of the Champlain Towers complex fell, and she died shortly after she arrived at the hospital. Panel Finds Daniel Snyder Interfered With Sexual Harassment Investigation
As the N.F.L. was investigating his team for widespread workplace misconduct, the Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder directed a “shadow investigation” to interfere with and undermine its findings, a Congressional committee found. At Snyder’s behest, the committee said, his legal team used private investigators to harass and intimidate witnesses, and created a 100-page dossier targeting victims, witnesses and journalists who had shared “credible public accusations of harassment” against the team. The House Committee on Oversight and Reform released a 29-page memo on Wednesday that detailed the findings of its eight-month inquiry into how the Commanders and the N.F.L. handled claims of rampant sexual harassment of the team’s female employees. The report was released ahead of Wednesday’s hearing, where the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, appeared remotely. Snyder declined two requests to appear, citing a “longstanding business conflict.” At Wednesday’s hearing, … [Read more...] about Panel Finds Daniel Snyder Interfered With Sexual Harassment Investigation

Jan. 6: Pressure, unsung heroes and Trump’s Watergate echoes
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 11 WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Jan. 6 committee launched under deep political skepticism: What more could be said about the deadly insurrection at the Capitol in 2021 that played out for all the world to see? Quite a lot, it turns out. The public hearings this month are showing in vivid and clear detail just how close the United States came to a constitutional crisis when President Donald Trump refused to admit his election defeat. Trump tried to use the powers of the presidency to stop Democrat Joe Biden from being certified the winner. When that didn't work, Trump summoned a mob to the Capitol. Despite the unprecedented Capitol attack, the hearings carry echoes from U.S. history. Like the Watergate hearings 50 years ago, the 1/6 committee has depicted a president “detached from reality,” as Trump's attorney general, Bill Barr, … [Read more...] about Jan. 6: Pressure, unsung heroes and Trump’s Watergate echoes

Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges
Fourth-generation Texan Leah Payne moved to Denver last year in the wake of a new Texas abortion law that imposed some of the strictest abortion restrictions in the nation. “We left our family, friends, sold our house. We couldn’t live somewhere where abortion access was constantly under attack,” Payne told The Denver Post. At 19, Payne, who was on birth control, got pregnant. She didn’t have insurance at the time and decided to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. “It was put out there as this big, bad thing that was traumatizing, but I never felt that,” Payne said. “Now, I’m 32, I’m a homeowner here in Denver and have a really successful career, a great partner, and I don’t think any of those things would have happened if I had not had an abortion at 19.” Payne chose her new home after learning about access to reproductive care in the state, and many Americans who woke up on Friday with fewer rights than they had a day prior may be forced to make similar … [Read more...] about Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges

However we personally feel about abortion, health—not politics—should drive important medical decisions. “With today’s decision, Michigan’s antiquated 1931 law banning abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and criminalizing … [Read more...] about Michigan Officials React After Supreme Court’s Roe v.
