(CNN) — The parents of accused Oxford school shooter Ethan Crumbley will still face multiple involuntary manslaughter charges, a judge ruled Wednesday, despite their attempts to quash the counts against them. Judge Cheryl Matthews said a lower court had ruled correctly that Crumbley’s parents can stand trial for the charges. READ MORE: Michigan Officials React After Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade Ruling Jennifer and James Crumbley were each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter after their teenage son allegedly shot and killed four students and injured seven other people at Oxford High School in November. They have both pleaded not guilty and their attorneys have argued in court documents that the charges have no legal justification and the couple should not be held responsible for the killings their son is accused of committing. But in court filings earlier this month, prosecutors argued to keep the manslaughter charges against the parents, saying their “gross … [Read more...] about James, Jennifer Crumbley Will Face Involuntary Manslaughter Charges, Judge Rules

Waiting game continues in Deshaun Watson discipline case
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 A decision regarding discipline for Deshaun Watson is still expected before training camp, though the league has yet to conclude its investigation and turn it over to a disciplinary officer, according to two people with knowledge of the case. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because the investigation is ongoing. The Cleveland Browns open training camp on July 22 for rookies with veterans due on July 26. Once the NFL completes its investigation, former U.S. District Judge Sue Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the league and the players’ union, will review the findings to decide whether Watson violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy and whether to impose discipline. The Cleveland quarterback reached an agreement to settle 20 of 24 civil lawsuits for sexual misconduct earlier this week. A league official told the AP the settlement … [Read more...] about Waiting game continues in Deshaun Watson discipline case

Panel Finds Daniel Snyder Interfered With Sexual Harassment Investigation
As the N.F.L. was investigating his team for widespread workplace misconduct, the Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder directed a “shadow investigation” to interfere with and undermine its findings, a Congressional committee found. At Snyder’s behest, the committee said, his legal team used private investigators to harass and intimidate witnesses, and created a 100-page dossier targeting victims, witnesses and journalists who had shared “credible public accusations of harassment” against the team. The House Committee on Oversight and Reform released a 29-page memo on Wednesday that detailed the findings of its eight-month inquiry into how the Commanders and the N.F.L. handled claims of rampant sexual harassment of the team’s female employees. The report was released ahead of Wednesday’s hearing, where the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, appeared remotely. Snyder declined two requests to appear, citing a “longstanding business conflict.” At Wednesday’s hearing, … [Read more...] about Panel Finds Daniel Snyder Interfered With Sexual Harassment Investigation
Jan. 6: Pressure, unsung heroes and Trump’s Watergate echoes
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 11 WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Jan. 6 committee launched under deep political skepticism: What more could be said about the deadly insurrection at the Capitol in 2021 that played out for all the world to see? Quite a lot, it turns out. The public hearings this month are showing in vivid and clear detail just how close the United States came to a constitutional crisis when President Donald Trump refused to admit his election defeat. Trump tried to use the powers of the presidency to stop Democrat Joe Biden from being certified the winner. When that didn't work, Trump summoned a mob to the Capitol. Despite the unprecedented Capitol attack, the hearings carry echoes from U.S. history. Like the Watergate hearings 50 years ago, the 1/6 committee has depicted a president “detached from reality,” as Trump's attorney general, Bill Barr, … [Read more...] about Jan. 6: Pressure, unsung heroes and Trump’s Watergate echoes

Houston Women’s Clinic posts sign saying it will no longer provide abortion care after Supreme Court Roe decision
Following Friday's Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade , abortion providers and clinics across the U.S. are grappling with a new national landscape in which state legislatures will determine whether abortion providers can continue administering care . One such institution navigating this new reality is the Houston Women's Clinic, which posted a sign outside its San Jacinto Street offices on Friday morning following Roe's overturning. Texas lawyer and former NASA engineer Poppy Northcutt tweeted a photo of herself in front of the banner, which announced "HWC is no longer able to provide abortion care." "A really sad day to see this sign go up this morning at Houston's Women's Clinic and to see patients being turned away," Northcutt tweeted. Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges
Fourth-generation Texan Leah Payne moved to Denver last year in the wake of a new Texas abortion law that imposed some of the strictest abortion restrictions in the nation. “We left our family, friends, sold our house. We couldn’t live somewhere where abortion access was constantly under attack,” Payne told The Denver Post. At 19, Payne, who was on birth control, got pregnant. She didn’t have insurance at the time and decided to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. “It was put out there as this big, bad thing that was traumatizing, but I never felt that,” Payne said. “Now, I’m 32, I’m a homeowner here in Denver and have a really successful career, a great partner, and I don’t think any of those things would have happened if I had not had an abortion at 19.” Payne chose her new home after learning about access to reproductive care in the state, and many Americans who woke up on Friday with fewer rights than they had a day prior may be forced to make similar … [Read more...] about Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges
