World Tibet Dalai Lama China The Dalai Lama has said that Tibet can remain a part of China if Beijing guarantees to protect the disputed region’s culture and autonomy. Speaking to mark the 60th anniversary of his exile to India on Sunday, the 82-year-old said Tibetan and Chinese citizens could have a mutually beneficial relationship, daily Indian newspaper The Hindu reported. The Dalai Lama—the 14th person to be chosen for the position—left Tibet at the start of the unsuccessful 1959 uprising against the Chinese central government. Over objections from Beijing, President Obama met with the Dalai Lama at the White House Wednesday morning. This was the fourth official meeting between the two Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Each meeting, dating back to 2010, has been closed to the media and hosted in the Map Room, rather than the Oval Office, which is usually reserved for foreign heads of state. The president was originally scheduled to campaign with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton on Wednesday in Wisconsin, but the event was postponed after the mass shooting in U.S. history at a gay club in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday morning, which killed 49 people. The White House was then able to schedule a visit from the Tibetan spiritual leader. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said that the president has "warm personal feelings" for the Dalai Lama. Earnest characterized the visit as a personal visit. Mercedes-Benz has apologised for "hurting the feelings" of the people of China for quoting the Dalai Lama on Instagram. The German auto giant became the latest of several international companies that have backpedalled recently for offending Chinese consumers with advertising or information that clashes with Beijing's official position on Tibet and other Chinese-claimed regions. Mercedes' seemingly benign post to its official Instagram account showed a Benz on a beach before rolling white-capped waves. "Look at situations from all angles, and you will become more open," the ad copy ran, citing the Dalai Lama, who is seen by Beijing as a separatist. "Start your week with a fresh perspective on life from the Dalai Lama," the carmaker wrote in the tagline. The Zen post immediately drew criticism from Chinese internet users for quoting the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, whom Beijing accuses of being a "wolf in monk's robes" seeking Tibetan independence through "spiritual terrorism".
