(AP) — Scotland High School coach Richard Bailey has had a handful of players make it to the NFL out of Laurinburg, North Carolina, none more special than Las Vegas Raiders rookie Zamir White. Shortly after the Raiders took White with the 122nd pick in the NFL draft, he said it was a moment he’d been waiting for his entire life. It’s a life he was never supposed to live. Affectionately known as Zeus, the now-chiseled 225-pound power back weighed 1 pound when his mother was six months pregnant. Doctors wanted to terminate the pregnancy. His great-grandmother demanded otherwise, even if it meant he could exhale only once. White was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate and was given two weeks to live. He spent the first three months of his life in a hospital, as he developed a leak in his kidney and needed surgery for a hernia. Later in life, White tore his … [Read more...] about Raiders RB Zamir White has overcome lifetime of obstacles

He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy. But should an 8-year-old be ranked at all?
King Tari Johnson is a 4-foot-8, 91½-pound 8-year-old from Stockton whose mother packs his Looney Tunes lunchbox with ham, salami and cheese sandwiches she cuts into his favorite shapes: stars, footballs and, of course, basketballs. He’s also the future of the NBA. At least, that’s what a couple of websites that track this sort of thing want you to believe. King Tari, with his smooth ballhandling, advanced footwork and deep shooting range, is considered one of the nation’s best third-grade basketball players. If all goes as planned, he could be a household name in, oh, about a decade. As for the near term? King Tari just wants a growth spurt. Of all the potential pitfalls on his path to the NBA, genes might prove his undoing: His father stands 5-10, and his mom is 5-2. “I’m hoping he grows to be at least 6 feet,” said Tari Johnson, King Tari’s dad and personal trainer. “That would definitely help his chances of getting to the league.” King Tari, a giggly, soft-spoken boy who … [Read more...] about He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy. Biden Admin Asks Federal Judge To Abandon Order Preventing End Of ‘Remain In Mexico’
The Biden administration asked a federal judge Monday to abandon his earlier order preventing the end of the “Remain in Mexico” policy used to expel certain migrants awaiting immigration proceedings to Mexico. “The Supreme Court has reversed the bases for this Court’s permanent injunction and held that this Court lacked jurisdiction to grant injunctive relief, see Biden v. Texas, 142 S. Ct. 2528, 2538, 2548 (2022), and so this Court should immediately vacate the injunction,” the Biden administration wrote in the motion to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. A migrant I met in Yuma last month was sent back to Mexico, under the Trump-era ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy. He sent me these pictures of the camp in Mexico where he’s awaiting his court hearing, telling me the air conditioning barely works, the food is expired, and it’s filthy. pic.twitter.com/XO6dKvz41C — Jennie Taer (@JennieSTaer) June 21, 2022 The Supreme Court allowed the Biden … [Read more...] about Biden Admin Asks Federal Judge To Abandon Order Preventing End Of ‘Remain In Mexico’
1,000 Israeli Students Call Out Ben & Jerry’s ‘Hypocrisy,’ Accuse Them of ‘Occupying’ Native Land in Vermont
Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is guilty of the “occupation” of stolen Native American land, according to a group of Israeli academics and students who accused the famed company of hypocrisy for seeking to stop the sale of its ice cream in Israeli settlements in the West Bank. In a letter addressed to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, signed by over 1,000 Israeli students in higher education as well as academics affiliated with the newly-launched Students for Justice in America, the Vermont-based company was called out for hypocrisy and double standards. According to a Tuesday report from the New York Post , the Israeli group of students and academics accused the ice cream maker of “illegally” occupying Native American land. The multi-national brand’s Vermont headquarters, according to the signatories, was originally settled by the Abenaki tribe and, thus, should be evacuated at once. “We have concluded that your company’s occupation of the Abenaki lands is … [Read more...] about 1,000 Israeli Students Call Out Ben & Jerry’s ‘Hypocrisy,’ Accuse Them of ‘Occupying’ Native Land in Vermont
The New ‘A League of Their Own’ Is the Rare Home-Run Reboot
It’s time to admit it: Prestige television is largely mediocre . It seems good while you’re watching it, but it’s smoke and mirrors—big-name streamers pour millions into new shows, causing style to be mistaken for substance. When you look back months later at a show you thought you enjoyed, can you still name more than three things you loved? Can you ascertain one reason you kept watching, other than, “Eh, I guess since I started it I should see what happens”? A League of Their Own is, remarkably, the antithesis of this “golden age” of televised deception. Remakes aren’t supposed to be good anymore. Ask the 47,000 think pieces about it that have been written in the last 10 years. Admittedly, Hollywood is devoid of new ideas, and would rather guarantee a return on their investments by frankensteining an old project with nothing new to say. But this new series is so surprisingly, refreshingly good. Amazon Prime’s serialized reboot of the beloved 1992 film about the … [Read more...] about The New ‘A League of Their Own’ Is the Rare Home-Run Reboot

0 Schools The state adopted new rules on sex ed in schools last year. Community Unit School District 46 has updated its middle school curriculum. Amie Schaenzer , Patch Staff Posted Reply GRAYSLAKE, IL — Community Consolidated School District 46 in Grayslake, like many school districts throughout the Chicago area, has opted out of teaching sex education in line with national standards to its youngest students. Under the law, school districts that teach sex education are now required to use the new standards for instruction, according to a memo from District 46. The new rules call for updated curriculum that provides personal health and safety education for schools that teach sex education to kindergarten through fifth grade students and comprehensive sexual health education … [Read more...] about D46 Will Not Adopt Sex Ed Standards For Youngest Students
