It is hard to imagine what motivates and guides the Biden administration’s foreign policy, apart from “Obama-imitation” and a few overarching pleasant outcomes. The breakdown of a bipartisan U.S. foreign policy came in the 1970s when the Vietnam consensus snapped. Since then, America’s principal foreign policy objectives have oscillated between the Republicans’ retention of and capitalization on advantages vis-à-vis America’s rivals and potential threats to its national interest and the Democrats’ promotion of broader ideals. President Nixon triangulated great-power relations with China and withdrew from Vietnam, leaving a non-communist government in Saigon, which fought the North Vietnamese and Vietcong to a standstill in 1973 before falling in 1975. Nixon re-established U.S. nuclear superiority with the SALT I agreement but, with Watergate and the cut-off of assistance to South Vietnam, that policy was replaced after a couple of years by President Carter’s promotion of human rights … [Read more...] about Biden’s foreign policy missteps boost anti-Americanism
Brexit leader Nigel Farage is wary of the UK joining the major pacific trading bloc CPTPP, warning the country could find itself being forced to accept “political harmonisation”, after having just left the European Union. Earlier this week, International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said that the government was pushing ahead with plans to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and could do so in as little as 12 months. The bloc is comprised of Pacific rim nations Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam and is the third-largest trading zone. China may have sabotaged its own prospects for securing a sought-after investment agreement with the European Union when it penalized a long list of politicians, researchers and institutions – including a key member of Germany’s Green Party – in response to recent EU sanctions. The Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, or CAI, was agreed to in principle at the end of last year but remains as much as a year from final ratification by the European Parliament, where support from Germany is seen as crucial to its approval. Recent polling shows the Greens – who are considered much tougher on China than the current administration in Berlin – as well positioned to participate in or even lead the next German government after elections expected in late September. And that could leave the investment deal as “dead as a doornail,” according to Green Party lawmaker Reinhard Buetikofer, who heads the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with China and appeared at the top of a list … [Read more...] about Is EU-China Investment Deal ‘Dead as a Doornail’?

Environmental justice concerns have been at the forefront in discussions of U.S. environmental policy. They have been central, in particular, to discussions of proposals for a nationwide carbon tax to address climate change. While economists tend to favor a carbon tax as the most cost-effective way to promote reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases, progressives and EJ groups often oppose this option on the grounds that it is regressive — that it would disproportionately burden low-income households. Our own research , conducted independently , finds that this claim is unfounded. We find that a carbon tax is inherently progressive, narrowing the income gap between rich and poor households. Beyond that, we find that it can potentially raise real incomes of low-income households. It is true that one outcome of a carbon tax works toward regressivity. A carbon tax would lead to higher prices of goods and services, especially those that are carbon-intensive (e.g., electricity … [Read more...] about Economists: A US carbon tax would be progressive
