Yankees, Aaron Judge settle on $19M contract before Friday’s scheduled arbitration hearing
Before actually engaging in an arbitration hearing, which was scheduled to begin at noon on Friday, Aaron Judge and the Yankees settled on a contract agreement. Judge will make $19 million this season, with an additional $250,000 if he wins American League MVP, and another $250,000 bonus if he brings home the 2022 World Series MVP. The $19 million settlement, which allowed the sides to avoid their arbitration hearing, is a significant raise from the $8.5 million he earned in 2020 and the $10.1 million figure he brought in last year. The $19 million is also a midpoint between the proposal from Judge’s camp ($21 million) and the one the team would have brought to the arbitrator ($17 million), according to multiple sources. Had the hearing actually occurred, the arbitrator would have had to decide between one of those numbers, as the system does not allow for compromises like that. This is the final season of Judge’s arbitration eligibility. He is set to hit the free agent market for … [Read more...] about Yankees, Aaron Judge settle on $19M contract before Friday’s scheduled arbitration hearing
Older Americans ‘Age In Place,’ Millennials Struggle To Find Homes
0 This post is sponsored and contributed by Personal Finance With more seniors than ever aging in place and choosing not to sell the family home, there is a critical shortage in available properties. Newrez , Brand Partner Posted | Updated Reply (Originally published by Newrez.) With more seniors than ever aging in place and choosing not to sell the family home, an estimated 1.6 million fewer properties are now available in a market already experiencing a critical shortage, according to Freddie Mac. That stay-put trend is crashing into the rising demand for housing from the huge millennial generation: fewer homes for sale will continue to put upward pressure on already overheated home prices. While some homeowners are choosing to age in place, others simply can't afford the high costs of moving. Today's housing market is incredibly pricey, and some can't afford to move into another home, even a smaller … [Read more...] about Older Americans ‘Age In Place,’ Millennials Struggle To Find Homes

Why Do the Obamas Need a 2,500-Gallon Propane Tank at Their Martha’s Vineyard Estate? It’s Not What You Think
Recently, a small notice in the local Martha’s Vineyard Times noted that approval had been granted for a “2,500-gallon commercial propane tank” at the address of the vacation home owned by former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama . The item set off some powerful reactions among the conspiracy-minded and even had us wondering why the Obamas would need that much gas. The former president's chief antagonists at Fox News even dedicated a segment to the proposed propane purchase with a chyron that expressed possible apocalyptic intentions. However, the reality is far less dire. Here’s what we learned after talking to propane gas experts. Why do the Obamas need a 2,500-gallon propane tank? Actually, they don’t. The permit the Obamas requested is for three separate tanks, not a single massive tank, according to Snopes . This means that for the nearly 30-acre property in Edgartown, MA, those tanks might be spread out and used for more than … [Read more...] about Why Do the Obamas Need a 2,500-Gallon Propane Tank at Their Martha’s Vineyard Estate? Mandatory Common Core tests in New York just happen to be full of corporate brand names
Across the state of New York, this year’s Common Core English tests have reportedly featured a slew of brand-name products including iPod, Barbie, Mug Root Beer and Life Savers. For Nike, the tests even conveniently included the shoe company’s ubiquitous slogan: “Just Do It.” The brands – and apparently even some of their familiar trademark symbols – appeared in tests questions for students ranging from third to eighth grades, reports The Post-Standard of Syracuse . Over one million students were required to take the tests. Parents, teachers and school administrators have speculated that the kid-friendly brand names are a new form of product placement. Education materials behemoth Pearson, which has a $32 million five-year contract to develop New York’s Common Core-related tests, has barred teachers and school officials from disclosing the contents of the tests. Students and parents are not so barred, though, and many have complained. “‘Why are they trying to sell me … [Read more...] about Mandatory Common Core tests in New York just happen to be full of corporate brand names
A year after condo collapse in Surfside, Florida, survivors focus on healing
SURFSIDE, Fla. — One year after a 12-story condominium tower collapsed , killing 98 people, survivors are grappling with the trauma and grief as they try to heal emotionally and physically. A 15-year-old boy found alive in the rubble is gaining strength from starting a nonprofit group with his father after his mother was killed in the collapse, and a 73-year-old man is returning to his religious roots after he saw divine intervention in the experience. Jonah Handler, now 16, was one of the few people pulled from the rubble alive. His mother, Stacie Fang, 54, was killed. Jonah was home with Fang when the South Tower of the Champlain Towers complex fell, and she died shortly after she arrived at the hospital. After Jonah was rescued, he called his father, using an EMT’s phone. “He was touched by God,” said Jonah's father, Neil Handler, Fang's ex-husband. “It’s a miracle.” Now Jonah and Handler live together in the building still standing, the North Tower. “It’s … [Read more...] about A year after condo collapse in Surfside, Florida, survivors focus on healing
