Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo confirmed Thursday that former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese products “have been effective.” In an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle, Raimondo discussed how President Joe Biden’s administration plans on dealing with China in terms of a “whole of government response,” and whether or not they would continue any of the policies Trump put in place. “Former President Trump got a lot of credit from a headline basis for taking on China. But go beneath the headline, we didn’t win any trade war. How are you going to address China?” Ruhle began. “We have to be honest, which is to say China’s behavior is anti-competitive, coercive, their human rights abuses are horrific, and they need to be held to account for that,” Raimondo responded. “So, unlike President Trump’s approach of, you know, tweeting out a policy, President Biden’s been very clear, we’re going to be tough on China in a whole of government response.” She … [Read more...] about Biden Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo Confirms Trump’s China Tariffs ‘Have Been Effective’

Jump in hiring fuels optimism for U.S. economic recovery
WASHINGTON — U.S. employers added a surprisingly robust 379,000 jobs last month in a sign the economy is strengthening as virus cases drop, vaccinations ramp up, Americans spend more and states ease business restrictions. The February gain marked a sharp pickup from the 166,000 jobs that were added in January and the loss of 306,000 in December. Yet it represents just a fraction of the roughly 9.5 million that the economy must regain to get back to where it was before the crisis. Unemployment fell from 6.3% to 6.2%, the Labor Department reported Friday. That is down dramatically from 14.8% last April, just after the virus erupted in the United States. But it’s well above the pre-pandemic rate of 3.5%. “The recovery really has some legs, some momentum now,” said Odeta Kushi, deputy chief economist at First American Financial Corp. In suggesting the economy is on the mend, the strong jobs report could complicate President Joe Biden’s struggle to push through his $1.9 trillion … [Read more...] about Jump in hiring fuels optimism for U.S. economic recovery

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency of the Defense Department said his remains were identified Tuesday. Kapaun was an army chaplain in World War II and the Korean War. He was captured on Nov. 2, 1950, near Unsan, North Korea, while tending to soldiers. He continued to minister to fellow prisoners until he died of pneumonia, the Defense Department said. Iranian Military Veteran Gets Short Sentence for Piloting Illegal Migrants Across Channel
Iranian military veteran Fariboz Rakei has received a short prison sentence for leading a boatload of migrants, including a seven-year-old child, on a perilous journey across the English Channel. The 49-year-old is one of ten people who have been convicted for offences related to people-smuggling migrants in the Channel so far this year, and has received the longest sentence yet — of just four-and-a-half years. This is despite the fact he is a so-called “boomerang migrant” , having already been deported from Britain to Germany as recently as 2019 following a previous illegal channel crossing, according to KentOnline. Criminals in Britain who receive non-“life” sentences are almost always automatically released early on licence halfway or, more rarely, two-thirds of the way through their terms, too, so the headline figure of four-and-a-half years is not likely to reflect the amount of time he Rakei will actually serve in prison. An Iranian man who risked his own life … [Read more...] about Iranian Military Veteran Gets Short Sentence for Piloting Illegal Migrants Across Channel
