A man is in custody in Nevada on charges related to a 40-year-old cold case, the 1979 killing of a young San Rafael woman. Charles Gary Sullivan, 73, was originally arrested in August in Yavapai County, Ariz., in connection with the violent death of 21-year-old Julia Woodward. He was extradited to Reno on Friday and will be arraigned Tuesday in Washoe District Court. Woodward’s body was found on March 25, 1979, in a remote area of Hungry Valley, about 15 miles north of Reno. She was last seen in California on Feb. 1., when a friend dropped her off at the San Francisco International Airport. Woodward was headed to Nevada to seek job opportunities in the Reno or Lake Tahoe area, according to records at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Nevada law enforcement officials are looking at possible links to another cold case from 1979. That victim, 17-year-old Jeannie Smith, was found in a shallow grave in Lemmon Valley, Nev., that November, about a mile from where … [Read more...] about Arrest made in 1979 slaying of San Rafael woman

California’s crusade against planet-warming emissions seems at times disconnected from the reality of its gridlocked freeways. But that hasn’t stopped a push for change. Even as power plants and other sectors have cleaned up, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in California have actually grown in recent years, a sign that cleaner and more … [Read more...] about To fight climate change, car-loving California must overhaul transportation. He parks on the street outside his Haight-Ashbury flat in San Francisco, which doesn’t have a garage. There aren’t any public charging stations in the neighborhood, so he charges in a parking lot outside the nonprofit where he works in Marin County. Wolfe said he can’t afford to rent an apartment that has a garage, at least not in San Francisco. Twice in the seven years he has driven electric cars, he’s run out of juice on the road and had to be towed to a charging station. “It becomes an economic justice issue and an equity issue,” Wolfe said of renters and their lack of access to car chargers. “People can’t run cables across the sidewalk.” His predicament illustrates gaps in California’s electric-vehicle charging infrastructure that clean-car advocates say could limit the state’s … [Read more...] about Californians are buying up electric cars.
