Although scientists have yet to find the elusive Planet 9, a recently discovered exoplanet in deep space may provide further evidence the mysterious celestial object indeed exists. The exoplanet HD 106906 b is 336 light years from Earth and has a bizarre orbit around its pair of host stars, going around once every 15,000 years, according to a study published in The Astronomical Journal. First discovered in 2013, the exoplanet is massive, at 11 times the size of Jupiter. Yet, it was only recently, thanks to measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope, that scientists were able to see its elongated -- 730 times the distance between the Earth and the sun -- and inclined orbit, unlike any of the known planets in the Solar System. ‘I Am Disappointed’: No Snow Day For Philadelphia Public Schools Thursday, Despite Student-led Petition
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — In light of the first winter storm of the season, students are making sure their voices are heard in the snow day versus no snow day debate. Some of their efforts were successful, while others are still holding out hope for a change of heart. Snow days are some of the most anticipated days of any school year, but after two quiet winters, it looks like Philadelphia public school students won’t be enjoying them this year either, due to the pandemic and remote learning. ”The beauty of digital learning is that inclement weather will not impact the ability to continue carrying out teaching and learning,” said Superintendent Dr. William Hite Wednesday morning. Hite is holding firm on his decision to not call for a snow day Thursday, despite a growing petition started by two Masterman Middle School seventh graders that approached 1,400 signatures by Wednesday afternoon. “It felt like a real group effort,” said Tova, who drafted the … [Read more...] about ‘I Am Disappointed’: No Snow Day For Philadelphia Public Schools Thursday, Despite Student-led Petition
Sikh Tradition of Community Kitchens Sustains India’s Farmers Protest
NEW DELHI - Along a highway on the outskirts of New Delhi where thousands of protesting farmers have been camping for three weeks, scores of volunteers roll out Indian bread called “rotis,” stir vegetables in gigantic pots, brew tea and fry savories. All through the day, makeshift kitchens that have sprung up on the roadside dish out hot meals to farmers who are demanding the roll back of new laws that liberalize rules for sale of farm produce to private companies. “We have come fully equipped to prepare mass meals. The supplies come from our villages daily and we run the kitchen round the clock,” says Gurinder Singh, a Sikh farmer who has helped organize a community kitchen at one of the protest sites. The staggering scale of cooking underway to sustain India’s biggest farm protest in decades is no surprise. Many of the farmers come from the northern Punjab state, where … [Read more...] about Sikh Tradition of Community Kitchens Sustains India’s Farmers Protest
