A 10-mile portage race will debut in Minneapolis next month that challenges competitors to hopscotch a course of lakes and creeks twisting from Lake Bde Maka Ska to Theodore Wirth Park. The Red Bull Urban Portage will start at 9 a.m. on Oct. 13 and feature individual divisions for men and women, and pairs for men, women and coed. Competitors ages 16 and older can paddle “in whatever human-powered vessel” they choose — canoe, kayak, paddleboard, whatever — and run on land between bodies of water, according to the announcement from Red Bull, the energy drink giant that is sponsoring the event. Also thrown into the mix is a test of navigational savvy along the route connecting Lake Bde Maka Ska, Lake of the Isles, Cedar Lake, Brownie Lake, Wirth Lake, Bassett Creek, Sweeney Lake and Twin Lake. “The challenge each participant will face is to either risk following the boat in front of you or reference your map and outmaneuver the competition,” the … [Read more...] about Red Bull plans 10-mile portage race combining paddling, running along Mpls. Brian E. Clark Special to the Journal Sentinel Published 1:00 p.m. UTC Aug 17, 2018 A dozen tiny dragonflies danced around the bow of my bright yellow sea kayak and dodged my paddle’s blades as they dipped into the water, making a soft popping sound each time the curved wood breached the surface. My long and slender boat, designed for kayaking in Puget Sound and the Great Lakes, sliced through the pea soup-colored water of the slow-moving Yahara River beside a raft of water lilies dappled with white flowers. In the clouded sky, an osprey swooped down from on high, driving off a bald eagle that was perched on a tree branch 30 feet above the stream. I paused to watch the birds tussle in midair, surprised that the much larger eagle put up only a little resistance as the osprey drove it away from its territory and, as I saw 50 yards downstream, its nest. I continued on, marveling at the lightness of my made-in-Osceola Bending Branches paddle as I … [Read more...] about Kayaking Madison’s chain of lakes takes you past the Capitol and into wilderness
Turtle Chain of Lakes Lake Report The weekend of September 26th, I made my annual trip up to the Turtle chain of lakes in Beltrami. The accessible lakes include; Turtle, Little Turtle, and Movil Lake. I arrived at the launch on "Big Turtle" on Friday the 25th around 1am and quickly buzzed over to my friends cabin on Movil where I spent the night. At the cabin it was me, my father (Steve) and my friends Chris, Mark and Rob. The day got off to a bit of a later start than I wanted but after a late night, sleeping in a bit wasn't so bad. We got up around 7 and hit the water by 8 where we were pleasantly greeted with 60 degree air temperature, overcast, 10 mph wind and 67 degree water temperature. Compared to most other years this was excellent weather. My dad hopped in my boat and the other three guys went with Mark in his. My dad and I discussed what we were going to do a little bit prior to getting up there but not knowing the water … [Read more...] about Turtle Chain of Lakes Lake Report: Beltrami County Minnesota

Here are some of the highlights (first the street level renderings, then several aerials.): Hat Tip, OurUptown … [Read more...] about Glimpse into Chain of Lakes future?
