The internet needs reform. Section 230 of the Federal Communications Decency Act insulates internet companies from content liability. Its famous 26 words are that: "No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider." The immunity is not specific. If your teen-age daughter is the target of internet bullying, “slut shaming,” a sex crime or even murder, the platform on which she met her tormentor is immune from responsibility. If you are the victim of fraud on the internet, cyberstalking, blackmail or extortion, the vehicle for criminal communication is immune from responsibility. If your privacy is invaded because you have given Facebook or Google too much data, it’s on you. You traded your data for a free membership. Section 230 has its roots in common law principles. The Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol in January created a trove of self-incriminating evidence, thoroughly documenting their actions and words in videos and social media posts. Now some of the camera-toting people in the crowd are claiming they were only there to record history as journalists, not to join a deadly insurrection. It’s unlikely that any of the self-proclaimed journalists can mount a viable defense on the First Amendment’s free speech grounds, experts say. They face long odds if video captured them acting more like rioters than impartial observers. But as the internet has broadened and blurred the definition of a journalist, some appear intent on trying. At least eight defendants charged in the Jan. 6 riot have identified themselves as a journalist or a documentary filmmaker, including three people arrested this month, according to an Associated Press review of court records in nearly 400 federal cases. The insurrection led to the deaths of five people, … [Read more...] about Some Jan. 6 defendants try to use journalism as U.S. Capitol riot defense
This is a wrap of several top stories from China for 19 April 2021. Hong Kong (CNN) Under President Xi Jinping, China's former leaders have grown accustomed to keeping their heads down. But in an essay published this week, ostensibly a tribute to his late mother, former Premier Wen Jiabao appeared to issue what many have interpreted as a coded criticism of Xi: calling for fairness, justice, humanity and liberty, all while remembering a period of history the Communist Party would rather forget. Wen's words took Chinese social media by the storm. His essay was shared hundreds of thousands of times -- before censors stepped in to stop people spreading it (yes, even the country's second-highest official for a decade could not escape China's increasingly stringent censorship). The essay was published in an obscure newspaper in Macao , perhaps indicating no mainland Chinese outlet was willing to publish it. Wen could not be reached for comment about … [Read more...] about Did China’s former Premier just subtly criticize President Xi Jinping?
Back in July of 2012, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick did an interview with Piers Morgan about his life, and all he’s gone through. It was then that Vick admitted that he may possibly own another dog some day. That “some day” has come. The reveal of Vick having another dog wasn’t intentional, as he was simply just looking to tweet out a picture of his family. There was one little thing in the picture though that had quick eyes on the internet seeing things and asking questions. Someone had noticed a box of dog biscuits in the picture, and the rumors began to swirl. Vick agreed to a guilty plea in August of 2007 on charges stemming from his involvement in a dogfighting ring. (Credit, Jonathan Ernst/Getty Images) Vick refused to discuss the issue on Wednesday afternoon. “I’m hear to strictly talk about football,” Vick said to reporters. He knew that this would be a matter that would never go away though, and he needed to address it. On Thursday … [Read more...] about Michael Vick Is A Dog Owner Again, Hopes To Turn Heads In A Good Way
The fate of President Joe Biden Joe Biden Graham: 'I could not disagree more' with Trump support of Afghanistan troop withdrawal Obama, Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley team up to urge communities of color to get coronavirus vaccine Biden to hold second meeting with bipartisan lawmakers on infrastructure MORE ’s $2 trillion infrastructure package lies with a small number of Senators, some of whom may shudder at its price tag. They shouldn’t. If we more carefully scrutinize the real state of the working and middle class, it’s clear this jobs bill is critical to the country’s future and, if anything, should be more expansive . However bad you think it is for these Americans — it’s worse than that. That’s not because the numbers are wrong, but because we are viewing them through the lens of a post - WWII economy. Take, as one clear example, the way we understand “median earnings”: By the traditional statistic, that stands at $51,168 today . … [Read more...] about When it comes to Biden’s jobs bill, bigger is better
