I spent almost a decade working in the governor's office. There were many eventful days during that period, perhaps none more newsworthy than the first one--the tumultuous afternoon of July 15, 1996, when Gov. Mike Huckabee took office after his predecessor, Gov. Jim Guy Tucker, waffled on whether or not he should resign. One of the most memorable and meaningful days occurred in September 1997 when Huckabee and President Bill Clinton opened the doors of Little Rock Central High School to welcome back the Little Rock Nine. For decades, people in Little Rock had taken pride in the beautiful building that houses Central High. It cost $1.5 million in 1927 and was described at the time by the New York Times as the most expensive high school ever built in this country. Quora, a website that provides a forum for asking questions of interesting people, has posted a session with Melba Pattillo Beals, a member of the Little Rock Nine, author of books on the school crisis and a former journalist and college professor. The unflinching answers won't surprise anyone who's met or read Beals. She says no classmate has ever apologized for mistreatment 61 years ago. Sean Brewer has been named principal of Madison Central High School. Brewer comes to the position with more than 23 years in education, 17 of which have been in administration. Most recently, he served for seven years as principal of Rosa Scott School, which is the ninth-grade feeder school for Madison Central (MCHS). “Sean is a respected leader who has worked closely with administrators and teachers across Madison County Schools. He has long been an asset to our district and is highly qualified and prepared to step into his new role as the leader of our largest high school,” Madison County Schools Superintendent Dr. Ronnie McGehee said. Trenton Central High School held its commencement ceremony on Monday at the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton. The seniors waived to family and friends as they marched onto the arena's main floor. The ceremony started at 4:00 pm. In her Valedictorian Address, Alahni Gunn told her fellow students "I want you all to pursue your dreams." In his remarks to the class, Mayor Eric Jackson proclaimed "It is true, what the sign on the bridge says - 'Trenton Makes (and) The World Takes'. You are the example. God bless you all." The building will be the site of a two-day full-scale emergency drill designed to test the Delaware Division of Public Health's ability to set up and operate a shelter for residents who may be displaced or unable to occupy their homes in the event of a disaster. "Area residents will notice DPH staff and emergency vehicles at the Sussex Central High School campus in Georgetown during this two-day timeframe but should be advised that activities taking place are simulation only, and should not to be mistaken for a real-life event," the public health department said. A site survey and exercise preparation will take place from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and the full exercise will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
