It was a very good day at the Golden Globes for FX and Amazon, a good day for BBC America and Showtime — and a fair day for HBO and Netflix. It was a terrible day for network television. Its most prestigious and highest rated drama, “This Is Us,” was shut out of the 2019 Golden Globe nominations. Not even previous winner Sterling K. Brown could score a nod. So NBC, which airs the ceremony Jan. 6, will reap no official recognition, just ad dollars, cementing the impression that the only events worth watching on network TV are those that are broadcast live (the Super Bowl, the Oscars, the Thanksgiving Day parade, musicals such as “Jesus Christ Superstar”). Still, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association didn’t make too many egregious errors. First up, Amazon was recognized for three distinct series, each with its own tone and spirit. The trendy “Twilight Zone”-inspired drama “Homecoming” scored 3 nominations, for best drama … [Read more...] about Golden Globes 2019 snubs: It’s a bad day for network TV

Associated Press Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018 | 12:05 a.m. ATLANTA — Media icon Oprah Winfrey and Vice President Mike Pence will be dueling campaigners Thursday in the Georgia governor's race. Winfrey will attend two forums with Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams. Both events are in metro Atlanta. Pence is scheduled to appear with Republican nominee Brian Kemp at three rallies around the state. High-profile visits continue with former President Barack Obama coming Friday to Atlanta for Abrams and President Donald Trump campaigning Sunday for Kemp. Polls suggest Abrams and Kemp are deadlocked in one of the hottest matchups of the midterm elections. Abrams would be the first black female governor in U.S. history. ‘The Lost City of Cecil B. DeMille’ Unearths Film History
In the midst of a modern age of obsession with Hollywood culture, a timely examination of the American film industry’s origins came in the form of a screening and panel discussion of director Peter L. Brosnan’s “The Lost City of Cecil B. DeMille” at the Harvard Art Museums on Oct. 10.On the surface, Brosnan’s film appears to simply be a documentary about archaeology, focusing on the unconventional excavation of a movie set — that of legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 blockbuster “The Ten Commandments”: City of the Pharaoh, an artificial ancient Egyptian metropolis. As the movie unfolds, however, it weaves Brosnan’s own story with that of DeMille’s, offering an in-depth look at the parallels between both of their acts of perseverance and defiance. While DeMille was known for commissioning some of the most extravagant movie sets of all time and reaching unprecedented success in cinema despite his studio’s … [Read more...] about ‘The Lost City of Cecil B. So long, Rudolphs Bar-B-Que. When it quietly closed last weekend, the venerable Minneapolis restaurant departed with a whimper. But it certainly didn’t start that way. In its heyday, Rudolphs was an influential player in the local dining scene. If nothing else, the 43-year-old ribs joint (that's a 1989 image of a whole slab of barbecued spareribs, with fries and coleslaw, priced at $15.95) had a significant role in igniting a late-night dining scene in what had been -- and in some ways continues to be -- an early-to-bed town. There were periods when the doors remained open to 4 a.m., an after-hours schedule that lured a lively, see-and-be-seen crowd from the worlds of theater, sports, music and restaurants. For years. “We get people in tuxedos, in evening gowns, in all kinds of costumes,” said night manager Tony Whelihan in a 1987 Star Tribune story. “On Halloween, the waiters and waitresses wear … [Read more...] about Rudolphs Bar-B-Que closed with a whimper, but it had a Hollywood past
