MIAMI (CBSMiami) — The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that most older Americans got their first booster dose many months ago and that may leave those who are vulnerable without continued protection. On Friday morning, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava received her second booster dose. She urged others in the county who may be at risk to do the same as positivity rates climb. Mining companies back away from Brazil’s Indigenous areas
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Some of the world’s biggest mining companies have withdrawn requests to research and extract minerals on Indigenous land in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, and have repudiated Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s efforts to legalize mining activity in the areas. The Brazilian Mining Association (Ibram), which represents around 130 companies, conducted an internal survey of its members earlier this year, according to Raul Jungmann, its president. For the first time in decades, none of the companies have current research or mining applications for gold, tin, nickel, iron and other ores in Indigenous areas, he said. Neither the survey nor its results have been reported previously. Members of the association, which accounts for 85% of Brazil’s legally produced ore, include mining giants Rio Tinto, Anglo American and Vale. The AP contacted all three companies. Rio Tinto confirmed it retracted its applications for research concessions in 2019. Anglo American did the … [Read more...] about Mining companies back away from Brazil’s Indigenous areas
Reaching New Heights in Relief from Painful Diabetic Neuropathy with High-Frequency Spinal Cord Stimulation
(BPT) - By David Caraway, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer of Nevro Corp. A diabetes diagnosis can feel like taking on a round-the-clock job – from which you receive no benefits, vacations, or breaks. Managing diabetes can take an enormous physical, mental, social, and financial toll. For people who develop complications of the condition, such as painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN), finding effective relief can feel like another endless task. About 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes, and millions will struggle with PDN during their lifetime. People with PDN experience a wide range of symptoms that typically affect the legs and feet. Pain can be described as burning, freezing, shooting, stabbing, deep aches, hypersensitivity, and “electric shock” sensations. In my work, I’ve heard from my patients time and again that the pain from diabetic neuropathy impacted so many aspects of their lives. Routine activities like spending time with family, gardening, walking the dog, and even … [Read more...] about Reaching New Heights in Relief from Painful Diabetic Neuropathy with High-Frequency Spinal Cord Stimulation
Nationalize Baby Formula
This is what monopoly looks like. Photo: George Frey/Bloomberg via Getty Images On Wednesday, President Joe Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to address the national baby-formula shortage , ensuring that formula manufacturers are first in line for any ingredients they require and directing the Pentagon to use its contracts with commercial airlines to speed the delivery of formula from overseas. It’s good, at least, to have a president who will wield the power of the executive branch to confront a national crisis. Donald Trump failed to invoke the Defense Production Act in the early days of COVID-19, dithering as the country was ravaged. The baby-formula shortage is a disaster for millions of families and Biden, well aware of his eroding popularity , is right to take it seriously. But the disappearance of baby formula was decades in the making, a product of a flawed economic system that favors the bottom lines of a select few corporate giants. In good times, Americans … [Read more...] about Nationalize Baby Formula

Residents In Northeastern Colorado Weigh In On Nebraska’s Push To Build Canal
(CBS4) – Plans to build a canal in northeastern Colorado that would divert water from the South Platte River into Nebraska continue to move forward. (credit: CBS) Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts announced his desire to build the waterway in January and said a one-hundred-year-old compact between the two states allows for it. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis through a spokesperson responded to those plans, calling it a canal to nowhere that is unlikely to be built. While the debate between politicians heats up, those who live and work in the targeted area say they knew it was a possibility. Julesburg, Colorado, a small town just a few miles from the Nebraska state line, may stand the most to lose given it’s built on the land that surrounds it. “The farming, it’s our lifeblood. If we don’t have those, we don’t have the grocery stores, we don’t have gas stations, insurance agencies, all those things,” Jay Goddard said. Like a vein through the community, the South Platte River … [Read more...] about Residents In Northeastern Colorado Weigh In On Nebraska’s Push To Build Canal
‘The Stranger’ Review: Joel Edgerton Loses Himself in This Dark Australian Thriller’s Many Layers
Click here to read the full article. Who knew that police sting operations did — or even could — work like the one seen in “ The Stranger ”? Based on the extensive Mr. Big ruse that brought a notorious Australian kidnapper to justice, this eerie, understated thriller draws the audience into the same deception used to ensnare the culprit, focusing on psychology more than procedure in its entrancing account of a most unusual criminal investigation. The case echoes Denis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners” at times, minus the twisted genre-movie payoff, which will limit commercial prospects beyond Oz shores. With a tortured performance by producer-star Joel Edgerton at its core, this second feature from gifted actor-turned-helmer Thomas M. Wright is as much about befriending the devil as his terrific 2018 debut, “Acute Misfortune,” was. (That film re-created the moth-to-flame portrait of a self-destructive bad-boy artist by an easily manipulated young journalist. Here, an undercover cop … [Read more...] about ‘The Stranger’ Review: Joel Edgerton Loses Himself in This Dark Australian Thriller’s Many Layers
Not Taking Back Control: UK Govt Allows Record Migrant Numbers
The Conservative Party has been accused of betraying its Brexit promises after it was revealed that the government has allowed in a record number of non-EU migrants. Britain’s ‘Conservative’ Party government allowed in a record number of non-EU migrants in 2021, a report published on Thursday has revealed. According to the head of the organisation who penned the report, the government’s failure to curb migration represents a betrayal of the promises made by the Tories before the Brexit vote, with officials having previously claimed that they would work to lower numbers once the UK escaped the European Union. According to a report by Migration Watch UK, the government has in fact done the opposite of what they had promised to do, with the number of people coming to Britain from outside the EU hitting record levels in 2021. Overall, more than 830,000 arrived in the UK on long term visas that year, which the organisation notes as representing a number greater than the entire … [Read more...] about Not Taking Back Control: UK Govt Allows Record Migrant Numbers
