Cal lost quarterback Chase Garbers to another injury in his first game back. It didn’t get any better for the Bears after that, and now coach Justin Wilcox’s team faces an uphill climb in its quest for a third consecutive bowl berth. A 41-17 loss to USC in the Joe Roth Game on Saturday night left the Bears (5-5, 2-5 Pac-12) needing to win one of their final two games to become bowl eligible. Cal plays at Stanford in the Big Game next week, then closes out against UCLA on Nov. 30. Both are winnable games, but the way things went against the Trojans, the Bears can’t take anything for granted. Cal has lost five of six, negating a 4-0 start that thrust the Bears into the Top 25 for the first time since 2009. Whether the Bears will have their starting quarterback for the stretch run is uncertain. Garbers returned after missing five weeks but didn’t last long. He engineered a scoring drive on Cal’s first series but was knocked out of the game after a 4-yard … [Read more...] about Cal demolished by USC; QB Garbers injured again
Climategate was the biggest scandal in the history of climate science. Modesty forbids me from identifying the guy who broke the story in the mainstream media — ten years ago this month — took it viral on the internet and brought it to worldwide prominence. Sorry, but I refuse to name the handsome, brave, witty, intelligent, funny, clever, spectacularly endowed, bravura writer, beloved parent, adored husband, and skilled horseman responsible for this veritable Scoop of the Century, if not the Millennium. No, absolutely not. Only from my cold, dead hands will you ever prise this secret information. Unless, maybe, you twist my arm just a tiny bit more and — Yeah, all right. I admit it. That godlike hero was me. Of course, if you believe the mainstream media, Climategate was little more than a fake news story concocted by a small cabal of wicked deniers in order to discredit the noble cause of climate science. This is a lie and a particularly dangerous lie at that. If we … [Read more...] about Delingpole: Climategate 10 Years On – The Bastards Have Got Away With It!
(CNN)Federal prosecutors Thursday urged the 1st US Circuit Court of Appeals to reject Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's request for an appeal, and uphold his conviction and death sentence. Prosecutors argued that Tsarnaev's right to an impartial jury wasn't violated simply because his trial was held in Boston, not far from the deadly bombings he was convicted of playing a role in. They argue that his request for a new trial should be denied. "Jurors who sat through the poignant trial testimony were unlikely to be influenced by any previous exposure to this media coverage," the filing states. "The mere existence of the coverage does not show that an impartial jury could not be selected in Massachusetts." David Patton, an attorney for Tsarnaev, had no comment on the filing when contacted by CNN. Tsarnaev's attorneys argued in late 2018 that "the community's exposure to the bombings and ensuring pretrial publicity" meant that jurors were exposed to details of the case before … [Read more...] about Federal prosecutors ask appeals court to uphold Tsarnaev conviction and death sentence
Boston, Massachusetts (CNN)Heather Abbott has never been one to stand still, even with one leg. As Abbott told me: "I accepted what happened pretty early on when I recognized that I couldn't change it." On April 15, 2013, Abbott was in the crowd near the finish line of the Boston Marathon when two bombs exploded, killing three and injuring hundreds of others. Within a matter of days, Abbott made the agonizing decision to have her left leg amputated below the knee. Six years later, her journey, and her story, have become an inspiration and she has become a champion for change. "I really wanted my old life back," a resolute Abbott told me, "so in order to do that I had to kind of push through some of the difficult things and concentrate on recovery." Read More I try and stop myself when I use the word "victim" because when you look at people like Heather Abbott, they're survivors. That strength is strength that I don't think I have. That resilience is resilience I don't think I … [Read more...] about Boston bombing survivor: There are enough amputees in the US to have a voice
(CNN)A "Win a Baby" contest hosted by a Florida radio station helped turn one couple into parents. The contest, which was hosted by Florida's B1039 in November 2017, offered one woman the chance to receive a free round of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and all the medication needed. The sweepstakes called for videos from women explaining why they'd be a great mom, the radio station said in a blog post Saturday. The winners of the contest in 2017 were Krista and Anthony Rivera of Cape Coral. The couple welcomed their son, Garrett Campbell Rivera, into the world in August 2019. "We certainly don't know how to do anything the easy way, but we are still blessed beyond measure," Krista Rivera told B1039 in August. Infertility is an issue affecting millions of people. In 2017, the American Medical Association declared infertility a disease. In the summary of the decision, the association expressed hope that the new designation would "promote insurance coverage and payment" and remove some … [Read more...] about Florida couple gives birth to boy thanks to ‘Win a Baby’ contest
