AUBURN — Dr. Thomas Mason of Auburn stopped Wednesday morning to visit his father at Auburn’s True Care home for patients with Alzheimer’s disease.This time, however, he found a lot of company.Mason was able to introduce his father, Charles, 91, to U.S. Rep. Jim Banks and about a dozen other special guests.Banks, a Republican congressman for northeast Indiana, had come to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and tour the home with attorney Bryan Nugen, True Care’s founder.Nugen invited several representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association and other health care organizations to meet with Banks. At 3 p.m. Thursday, a 24-hour marathon game of bingo ended at Southwind Healthcare and Rehabilitation. The entire event was recorded and documentation will be submitted to Guinness for verification of the longest continuous bingo game. A core team of six people played bingo for the entire 24-hour span. Residents from Southwind and surrounding nursing homes playing at times, as did family members, staff and volunteers. The event was more than just a game, though. Sponsored by Elder Outreach and Team Mergist, it was also designed to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.
