Wilting slightly in the August sun, Sen. Alex Padilla, Rep. Tony Cárdenas, Assemblymember Luz Rivas and Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez gathered Wednesday in front of their former high school to endorse Rep. Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayor’s race. San Fernando High School — their shared alma mater — has been an unlikely breeding ground for political power in the state. The public high school in a predominantly Latino, working-class section of the northeast San Fernando Valley has launched the careers of numerous current and former California politicians. Illinois AP Media Editors announces 2021 journalism awards
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Margaret Holt, a former editor at the Chicago Tribune, was named Friday the 2022 Lincoln League honoree during the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors Awards presentations at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield. Holt finished her career at the Tribune in January as standards editor. She was also newspaper’s first female sports editor. The Lincoln League honors longtime Illinois journalists for their career contributions to the industry. IAPME winners were also announced for journalism excellence in news, sports, features, editorials, columns and photos from 2021. Division I award winners: General Excellence: First place, The Southern Illinoisan; second place, Herald & Review; third place, Effingham Daily News. “Of the dead, speak nothing but what is good.” It’s an ancient rule and a wise one, but one that does not do justice to the life and career of Andrew Breitbart, dead today aged 43. It is impossible to speak nothing of a man who traced such a spectacular course through the contemporary media. But to speak only “good” of Andrew Breitbart would be to miss the story and indeed to misunderstand the man. The good was there. Breitbart was by all accounts generous with time and advice, a loving husband and father, and a loyal friend. One of those friends, Arianna Huffington, wrote today : “All I can think is what Andrew meant to me as a friend … his passion, his exuberance, his fearlessness." Breitbart was unquestionably passionate and was exuberant. If by “fearless” you mean perpetually eager for confrontation, then yes he was fearless too, although in a very particular way.
