Photo on left via Non Sequitur, photo on the right by Marissa Mahoney The Orlando Sentinel has pulled the nationally syndicated "Non Sequitur" cartoon from their paper after readers pointed out that it said "Go fuck yourself, Trump." The cartoon, which appeared in Sunday's paper, showed the image of a bear alongside Leonardo Da Vinci-style drawings, and contained no political messaging other than the little handwritten "Go fuck yourself, Trump" in the bottom right corner. "When Sentinel editors heard what was done, we decided to stop publishing 'Non Sequitur.' Other newspapers in our group, Tribune Publishing, are taking similar action, including the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Hartford Courant and the Chicago Tribune," wroteOrlando Sentinel content director for operations John Cutter, who noted that local readers also spotted the message. Orlando's parent company, Tribune Publishing, issued a statement Tuesday apologizing for the cartoon, and Julie Anderson, … [Read more...] about Orlando Sentinel cancels comic after readers pointed out it said ‘Go fuck yourself, Trump’

Orlando Sentinel apologizes to Groveland Four families
It's been 70 years since one of the worst episodes of racial violence in Florida history began. Four black men were wrongly accused of raping a white woman in 1949. The four men became known as the Groveland Four. They were tortured, murdered or falsely imprisoned by a Lake County sheriff for a crime they didn't commit. Now the Orlando Sentinel, then called the Orlando Morning Sentinel, is apologizing for its role in the chain of events. "The story had many more ugly twists and turns marked by lies, cover-ups and injustice," the paper's editorial page wrote Thursday. "You wouldn't know it from reading the Orlando Morning Sentinel in the years immediately following the incident." Rather than questioning the official version of what happened, the Sentinel stated, the Morning Sentinel sympathized with the culprit, Lake County Sheriff Willis McCall. After a federal grand jury was impaneled in 1950 to consider civil rights violations in case, longtime Lake County reporter … [Read more...] about Orlando Sentinel apologizes to Groveland Four families
Orlando Sentinel goes through major leadership shake-up
click to enlarge The Orlando Sentinel will now share its publisher and editor-in-chief with its sister paper, the South Florida Sun Sentinel, after ousting publisher/editor-in-chief Avido Khahaifa. Chicago-based parent company Tribune Publishing announced Monday that the Sun Sentinel's publisher and general manager Nancy Meyer will become the publisher of both newspapers. Similarly, Sun Sentinel editor-in-chief Julie Anderson will take over duties at the Orlando Sentinel and run the two papers. Both Anderson and Meyer have previous experience working in Orlando. Orlando Sentinel managing editor John Cutter is being promoted to director of news operations and standards. The papers will reportedly combine forces to create a state news team with reporters covering politics, health and the environment. "I am confident that Nancy's and Julie's leadership, news judgment and history of digital innovation will benefit the entire team in Florida," said Tim Knight, president … [Read more...] about Orlando Sentinel goes through major leadership shake-up
Orlando Sentinel columnist David Whitley doesn’t know how a protest works
click to enlarge Today, Parkland shooting survivor and harsh NRA critic David Hogg will encourage people to protest Publix grocery stores by lying down in the aisles for 12 minutes, beginning at 4 p.m. This show of solidarity is in response to a Tampa Bay Times report that showed that the grocery store chain gave an unprecedented $670,000 to self-described "proud NRA sellout" Adam Putnam, a Florida politician who has spent his career attempting to loosen our state's gun laws. This morning, Orlando Sentinel columnist David Whitley published arguably the worst take yet on today's planned protests, stating that "a calm, respectful dialogue is the only way we’ll ever achieve 'sensible gun control,' whatever that means." click to enlarge Screen grab via Orlando Sentinel "I suggest buying a box of delicious Publix fried chicken and asking the would-be corpse to get up and discuss the issue over a nice drumstick," says certified big boy Whitley. … [Read more...] about Orlando Sentinel columnist David Whitley doesn’t know how a protest works
