What was missing from the Arizona state GOP meeting was a resolution slamming Trump for his buffet of dangerous lies about election fraud and for inciting the January 6 insurrection on our Capitol. This is what we are seeing from the majority of GOP members of Congress as well. After the deadly January 6 attack on our Capitol by those seeking to prevent the congressional certification of Biden's win, 147 Republicans who returned to the chamber after they and other lawmakers had to flee the Trump mob still voted against certifying Biden's wins in Arizona and Pennsylvania. … [Read more...] about Arizona Republicans still backing Trump are on the wrong path

Senate Republicans Don’t Even Want to Have an Impeachment Trial
This “process” argument against the trial (which has some scholarly support, as does the argument that it is entirely proper) has the benefit of appealing both to Republicans who claim Trump did nothing wrong (or at least nothing impeachably wrong) on January 6 and those who have criticized his conduct to one degree or another. It’s a big part of the reason that securing 17 Republican votes to convict the former president is highly unlikely. The immediate appearance of 2022 primary opponents for the ten House Republicans who voted for impeachment, plus loud pleas and threats to senators from MAGA folk, will have an effect as well, along with Trump’s own warning that he could start a third-party movement if Republicans aren’t loyal to him. … [Read more...] about Senate Republicans Don’t Even Want to Have an Impeachment Trial
Republican Senator Rob Portman to Retire in 2022
Less than a week since Chuck Schumer took the gavel as Senate Majority Leader, and three weeks after that development was assured with two Democratic Senate victories in Georgia runoffs, speculation about 2022 Senate races began with two-term Ohio Republican Rob Portman announcing he will retire that when his current term expires. This makes three open Republican seats in 2022 so far, with Pennsylvania’s Pat Toomey and North Carolina’s Richard Burr having already announced retirements. Iowa’s Chuck Grassley and Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson could also retire but haven’t indicated they will just yet. … [Read more...] about Republican Senator Rob Portman to Retire in 2022
Will Democrats eliminate the filibuster in the Senate? What to know
McConnell may favor of an impeachment trial for former President Trump. But he also knows that an impeachment trial presented him with an ace to play. McConnell could agree to work with Schumer on an organizing resolution for the Senate and also to confirm some of President Biden’s nominees – before a trial. But McConnell isn’t going to give much quarter. He argues that maintaining the legislative filibuster is crucial for the institution. It’s also of paramount important to the minority. And, perhaps most importantly, McConnell knows that if Democrats were to end the filibuster, he scores the best victory of all. He can accuse Democrats of a power grab and weaponize the issue against the other side in the 2022 elections. … [Read more...] about Will Democrats eliminate the filibuster in the Senate? Gaetz traveling to Wyoming to take aim at Cheney amid uproar over her Trump impeachment vote
Cheney, the number three House Republican in leadership, has been pilloried by some of her GOP colleagues in the chamber for voting to impeach Trump earlier this month. Cheney, a vocal Republican critic of Trump’s foreign policy during his tenure in the White House and the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was the most high profile of the 10 Republicans who joined all 222 House Democrats in voting to impeach the president. The vast majority of House Republicans – 197 of the 211 in the chamber, voted against impeachment. … [Read more...] about Gaetz traveling to Wyoming to take aim at Cheney amid uproar over her Trump impeachment vote
