( CBS Detroit ) — A third stimulus check, worth $1,400, is currently progressing through Congress as part of the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion relief package. The American Rescue Plan also features increased unemployment benefits, a higher child tax credit and a $15 minimum wage, as well as billions more dollars to stop the spread of COVID-19. These and other programs are meant to aid millions of Americans facing financial hardship brought on by the pandemic and support the economy as vaccinations continue. How the bill evolves in the coming days will determine how much money actually reaches the public. President Biden and politicians from both parties support giving Americans another stimulus check. And they support doing it quickly. However, Republicans have pushed back against the overall price tag and other specific aspects of the plan, like the minimum wage hike. Democrats control both houses of Congress and are willing to pass stimulus legislation on a straight … [Read more...] about Stimulus Check Latest: Will Your Next Relief Payment Be $1,400?
The socialist government of Argentina imposed a one-time wealth tax on its citizens this week, allegedly to offset the country’s crippling debt, which has worsened during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic. Argentine citizens with assets of more than 200 million pesos ($2.3 million) must pay about three percent in taxes on assets declared within Argentina and over five percent on assets held abroad. The one-time special levy will apply to around 12,000 people in the South American country. Argentine senators passed the so-called “millionaires’ tax” by 42 votes to 26 in December. The country’s gross domestic product plummeted 11.8 percent in 2020, while Argentina’s poverty rate jumped from “35.4 percent in the first half of 2019 to 40.9 percent during the same period in 2020,” according to a recent report by the Washington … [Read more...] about Argentina Passes One-Time Money Grab ‘Wealth Tax,’ Citing Coronavirus
A Republican lawmaker facing a tough re-election campaign will introduce a bill to replace the federal gas tax with a tax on greenhouse gas emissions from industrial activities, according to plans obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo’s draft legislation would slap a $23 per ton tax on carbon dioxide emissions on a range of industrial activities, from refining to coal mining, the revenue of which would mostly go towards highway funding. (Here’s A Summary Of Curbelo’s Draft Carbon Tax Legislation) The draft legislation would also direct some funding towards offsetting higher energy costs for poor families, funding global warming adaptation programs and compensating energy workers who lose their jobs. The bill also puts a moratorium on some environmental regulations, though reining in regulations is contingent upon the country meeting emissions reductions goals. TAIPEI - Uighur rights groups are urging multinational corporations that have agreed to sponsor the Beijing Winter Olympics, to boycott what they call the “Genocide Games” and use their platforms instead to educate the world about China’s persecution of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang province ahead of the 2022 event. So far none of the big-name sponsors have endorsed the Uighur campaigners’ calls for justice. Observers who spoke to VOA say that’s because companies haven’t felt the political pressure, which they expect to build as the games draw closer. “Here we are 12 months before the games begin. The fact that some companies are not yet talking about the boycott, I think it’s because they haven’t felt the political pressure or the effect of the boycott on their own products. But they will. You’ll see increasingly that happens,” Andrew Zimbalist, an economics professor at Northampton, Massachusetts-based Smith College told VOA. “Every company is going to assess the state of … [Read more...] about Uighur Rights Groups Pressure Corporate Sponsors to Boycott 2022 Beijing Olympics
