KUALA LUMPUR - The United Nations and rights groups are urging Malaysia to reconsider its plans to repatriate some 1,200 Myanmar nationals on Tuesday, saying they include asylum seekers and registered refugees whose lives will be put at risk. Myanmar’s military has been waging a brutal counterinsurgency against a patchwork of ethnic-minority rebel armies since the country’s independence in 1948, a struggle that has scattered thousands of refugees across the region. The military took full control of the country after toppling the democratically elected government on Feb. 1, sparking widespread protests and an increasingly violent crackdown. News of Malaysia’s plans to send the Myanmar nationals in its detention depots back home broke just over a week ago. On Feb. 15, via state-run news outlet Bernama, Malaysia’s immigration chief, Khairul Dzaimee Daud, said they were all picked up for immigration offenses and that none held a U.N.-issued refugee card. Petition To Remove New Cadbury Egg Commercial Surfaces After Company Releases Ad Featuring Same-Sex Kiss
A petition to have Cadbury’s latest commercial taken off air surfaced after viewers took issue with a same-sex kiss featured in the ad, according to an article published Friday by the New York Post . The petition, which was created Feb. 15 on Citizen Go , had over 27,000 signatures at the time this post was published. The whole advertisement features different ways you can eat the Cadbury egg. WATCH: “By choosing to feature a same-sex couple, Cadbury’s are clearly hoping to cause controversy and escape criticism by claiming that any objections must be rooted in ‘homophobia,’ but members of the LGBT community have also expressed their dislike of this campaign,” the petition stated. Kraft Foods, Cadbury agree $19.5 bln deal
LONDON (AP) — British candy maker Cadbury PLC on Tuesday accepted Kraft’s improved takeover offer worth $19.5 billion, potentially ending a months-long corporate battle to create the world’s largest maker of chocolate and sweets. The U.S. food conglomerate said the board of Cadbury, maker of Creme Eggs and Dentyne gum, had unanimously endorsed the offer worth 840 pence per share, or 11.9 billion pounds in total. Cadbury shareholders will also get a 10 pence dividend previously promised by Cadbury. The revised bid is for 500 pence cash and 0.1874 new Kraft shares for each Cadbury share, still somewhat less than some analysts believed the company is worth but 50 percent higher than Cadbury’s market value before Kraft went public with its approach. Kraft Foods Inc.’s previous offer of 10.5 billion pounds ($17.1 billion) valued Cadbury at about 770 pence, but was dismissed by the British company’s management as “derisory.” Kraft still has to persuade a majority of Cadbury … [Read more...] about Kraft Foods, Cadbury agree $19.5 bln deal
