Sour Patch Kids are Maine’s favorite Halloween candy, followed by Starbursts and M&M’s, according to a recent survey of sales data by CandyStore.com. But little taste buds would disagree. We did our own survey of students at the Amanda C. Rowe Elementary School in Portland, and Sour Patch Kids and Starbursts weren’t mentioned once. But we got an earful about M&M’s and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and we learned more than we wanted to know about Gummy Boogers.Superheroes come and go, and Halloween costumes go in and out of fashion, but some things about the scariest holiday of the year never change: Kids still like sugar. CLEVELAND, Ohio - The folks at Eat This, Not That! are out with an entertaining list of candy and calories. Eat This, Not That! ranked 52 candies. What's interesting is that several mini sizes are included. Maybe the tinier bites make us think a nibble or two or six isn't that much. But they are some of the unhealthiest candy on the market. They note Sour Patch Kids have more sugar than a Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnut. Those thin Andes mints you pick up on the way out of a fancy restaurant? "One of the worst candies in the supermarket," the site says. "The first two ingredients are sugar and partially hydrogenated oil, and you're getting as much saturated fat as you'll find in a handful of french fries." It’s that time of year again when candy is everywhere: in the breakroom at work, at the bottom of your kid’s backpack, melting in your pocket. So which Halloween candy do Illinoisans reach for the most? Kit Kats, according to CandyStore.com, a bulk candy dealer that sorted through all of its sales data between 2007 and 2017. In those 11 years, Illinois bought 169,089 pounds of the chocolate bar. The second most popular candy in Illinois was Sour Patch Kids, followed by Snickers. Wisconsin favorites were Butterfinger, Starburst and Hot Tamales. In Indiana, the top picks were Hot Tamales, Starburst and Jolly Ranchers. Nationwide, the most popular candy was Skittles, followed by M&M’s, Snickers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Starburst.
