I wanted to tell you about the experience of a woman who inspired this series. The woman, whom I will not identify, showed up at the Free Press' December forum titled "Seeking Pathways out of the Opioid Addiction Crisis in Vermont" that built on your interest in Kate O'Neill's heart-wrenching obituary for her sister and the response it provoked from Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo. Annabelle Robert, 25, was pulled from a car shortly after midnight on Aug. 3 after a Volkswagen went off of Plunkton Road in Warren, hit a culvert and burst into flames, Vermont State Police have said. Elizabeth Murray Burlington Free Press Published 2:01 p.m. UTC Aug 8, 2018 A Burlington woman killed in a crash late last week died from smoke inhalation, according to a death certificate released Tuesday. Annabelle Robert, 25, was pulled from a car shortly after midnight on Aug. 3 after an SUV went off of Plunkton Road in Warren, hit a culvert and burst into flames, Vermont State Police have said. Robert's death certificate identifies her as the driver of the car that hit the culvert, causing her fatal injuries. Rib fractures due to the impact against her chest is listed as a condition that contributed to her death. Her manner of death is listed as an accident. Trooper Crista Maurice said Tuesday evening that the cause of the crash remains under investigation until Robert's autopsy report is complete. Elizabeth Murray Burlington Free Press Published 4:14 p.m. UTC Aug 6, 2018 WARREN – A Burlington woman who died in a one-car crash late last week is being remembered as "a shining light in the community," according to her obituary. Annabelle Robert, 25, was in an SUV that burst into flames after it went off the road and hit a culvert on Plunkton Road in Warren early Friday morning. Vermont State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. A celebration of Robert's life will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at American Flatbread in Waitsfield. Robert's obituary asks that donations be sent to Vermont Dog Rescue in lieu of flowers. Robert came to Vermont to attend Champlain College after growing up in Brewster, New York.
