Carry-on luggage in overhead storage compartment on commercial airplane. (iStock) If you’re the kind of person who likes to try on almost everything you own before deciding what to wear for the day, you won’t be very interested in this ode to the carry-on. On the other hand, there may be some things about traveling with a small bag — and leaving your larger luggage at home — that will surprise you. What’s great about using a carry-on bag You can pack everything you need: You can’t pack everything, but you can pack everything you need. I’m proof of this: I use the small bag on 10-day trips to Europe. I wear the bulkier stuff on the day of travel (like coats and heavy shoes) and I pack the other clothes in a zip bag and smoosh it down flat before zipping it closed. (You can shove an awful lot of these flattened clothing packs in a carry-on.) This video demonstrates exactly how it is done. It takes approximately 35 seconds in a room with Stephan James to get it. Julia Roberts got it the moment they met for a chemistry read for Sam Esmail’s Amazon drama Homecoming. Barry Jenkins got it, politely rebuffing the 24-year-old Jamaican-Canadian actor’s eager offer to perform every one of his character’s scenes on tape to audition for the director’s new award-season drama If Beale Street Could Talk. He was sold from the first impression. For Ava DuVernay, it took, somehow, even less time. She got it after Selma star David Oyelowo sent her the trailer for the 2014 sports drama When the Game Stands Tall while she was casting John Lewis. After just a glimpse of James in the trailer, she put him up to play John Lewis in her Martin Luther King Jr. biopic. I introduce myself to him in a small room at the JW Marriott Essex House, a posh hotel overlooking Central Park that bafflingly reeks of cat litter doused in beef stock. He’s there to do press … [Read more...] about Stephan James Is the Breakout Star of 2018: From ‘Homecoming’ to ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’
(Chevrolet) General Motors will soon offer 12 models powered by diesel engines in the United States, but don’t call them the dirty dozen. Despite the recent Volkswagen emissions scandal, and a quickening industry-wide shift toward electrification, GM sees a promising future for the technology. The lineup covers a wide range of vehicles that already includes the Chevrolet Cruze, GM’s heavy duty trucks and even the high performance off-road Chevy Colorado ZR2 pickup. But the newest entries have the potential to be the biggest-sellers. CHEVROLET COLORADO ZR2 TAKES FLIGHT: Video Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain compact utility vehicles powered by diesel engines are on the way to showrooms now. They will be the only diesels and boast the highest highway fuel economy in the segment when they go on sale in a couple of weeks. The pair use the same 137 hp 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine as the Cruze, and get EPA ratings of 39 mpg highway (38 mpg AWD) and 32 mpg … [Read more...] about 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Diesel first drive: Ready for the long, if not heavy haul
Photo: Andrew Harnik/AP/Shutterstock Alexander Acosta is running out of friends. His work as secretary of Labor is haunted by his former life as a U.S. Attorney and by the leniency he once showed billionaire sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein. With Epstein facing a new round of charges, Acosta is more reliant than ever on the goodwill of Donald Trump. But Trump, though he defended Acosta on Tuesday, may be out of patience with the secretary for reasons that have little to do with his moral and professional failings in his former job. A report in Bloomberg suggests that Acosta has alienated Trump, who believes the secretary has not pursued deregulation with due vigor. Acosta, with his baggage from the past and struggles in the present, is both an appropriate and easy target for House Democrats. Or he would be, if Democrats actually wanted to fully exercise their oversight authority. But that outcome looked distant on Tuesday. Though she’s called on Acosta to resign, Speaker Nancy … [Read more...] about What Does Nancy Pelosi Think She’s Doing?
