The Republican-controlled Mississippi state Senate on Thursday passed a bill that seeks to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls’ or women’s sports at state schools and universities. According to The Associated Press , the Senate passed the measure in a 34-9 vote. The legislation is the latest effort by state legislators across the country to impose restrictions on transgender youth in athletics, as well as gender-confirming health care. ADVERTISEMENT “I’ve had numerous coaches across the state call me and believe that they feel there’s a need for a policy in Mississippi because they are beginning to have some concerns of having to deal with this,” state Sen. A New Jersey university dean is resigning after the school banned Chick-fil-A on campus despite it being students’ top pick. The university said in an email to students in November 2018 that the chain restaurant’s “corporate values have not sufficiently progressed enough to align with those of Rider.” Chick-fil-A has been under scrutiny since 2012 after CEO Dan Kathy defined marriage between a man and a woman. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) on Thursday committed to signing a bill that bans transgender athletes from participating in girls’ or women’s sports at state schools and universities. His commitment to approve the bill comes after the state House this week passed the legislation, which is expected to make it to the governor’s desk in the upcoming days. The Mississippi Senate previously passed the bill last month, with both chambers voting mostly along party lines. “I will sign our bill to protect young girls from being forced to compete with biological males for athletic opportunities,” the governor said in a tweet.
