The New Orleans Fire Department is investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire which resulted in smoke and water damage to a portion of the old Bohn Ford Motor Co. building at 2700 S. Broad St.The fire started in storage area on the third-floor of the building, which is currently being renovated to house an Odyssey House detox facility. The NOFD said in a press release that construction workers were on site when they responded to the fire. Smoke and water damage extended to the second and first floors of the building. New Orleans firefighters were called to a 2-alarm fire Monday morning (Nov. 26) at the former Bohn Motor Co. at 2700 South Broad Street, which is under renovation to house an Odyssey House detox facility.Some smoke damage was visible on the exterior of the building. The fire was under control by 11 a.m. The planned renovations would provide 100 beds for short-term addiction treatment and 50 for patients who are detoxing.Odyssey House partnered with Gulf Coast Housing Partnership and Rhodes Commercial Development to redevelop the 41,300 square foot historic building on South Broad Street. The Rhodes family purchased the building, which was once home to the Bohn Motor Co., in 2005 within days of Hurricane Katrina. Philly Free Streets, Philadelphia's roaming car-free holiday, is set to return this week along four miles of North Broad Street. Overall creating an eight-mile round trip for avid walkers, Broad will be closed from City Hall up past Erie Avenue to Butler Street – open only to pedestrians and bicyclists.“We know that Philly Free Streets brings together people from across our city," Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement about the event which in past years has reportedly attracted 40,000 visitors. Philly Free Streets, the city’s program when a number of streets are shut down for pedestrians to run, bike or walk, is returning for its third year this Saturday — this time on Broad Street, which will be closed to vehicles for eight miles between City Hall and Broad and Erie. Inspired by Pope Francis’ visit in 2015, the event was created in 2016 to highlight Philly’s walkability and encourage everyone to exercise, as the city ranks highest in the country for diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The route is open to all walkers and people-powered, non-motorized transport, which means you should leave all e-bikes, powered scooters, powered skateboards, hoverboards and segways at home.
