Nineteen people have been sentenced to death in Myanmar for killing an associate of an army captain, the military-owned Myawaddy TV station said Friday. These are the first such sentences announced in public since a February 1 coup and crackdown on protesters. The report said the killing took place on March 27 in the North Okkalapa district of Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city. Martial law has been declared in the district, allowing courts-martial to pronounce sentences. The military rulers who overthrew an elected government said on Friday that a protest campaign against its rule was dwindling because people wanted peace, and that it would hold elections within two years, the first timeframe it has given for a return to democracy. Troops fired rifle grenades at anti-coup protesters on Friday in the town of Bago, near Yangon, witnesses and news reports said. At least 10 people were killed, and their bodies were piled inside a pagoda, they said. Prince Philip exemplified a greater generation of service and duty
May 7, 2007 was among the most memorable days of my life — the day I met Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip , the Duke of Edinburgh. With the duke’s passing on Friday at age 99, the world lost an iconic figure — a constant for nearly a century. So, too, we lost a connection to another era and a leading example of the lessons of the “Greatest Generation,” the merits of duty and honor. In the early 2000s, I advised the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee on U.K. affairs and founded the Congressional United Kingdom Caucus. In connection with these duties, I was thrilled to receive an invitation to the British Embassy Garden Party in honor of the royal couple’s 2007 State Visit . Like other attendees, I was awestruck to meet this pair, but the duke broke the ice by asking, “Young man, what is your affiliation here today?” I replied, “Sir, I founded a congressional group called the United Kingdom Caucus.” With the timing of a great comedian, Prince Philip shot back, … [Read more...] about Prince Philip exemplified a greater generation of service and duty
Myanmar Envoy Appeals for No-Fly Zone, Arms Embargo
Myanmar's U.N. envoy, who was appointed by the democratically elected government, appealed to the international community Friday to protect civilians from the country's military with a no-fly zone, arms embargo and targeted sanctions. "It is necessary to have strong and urgent actions on the U.N. Security Council in order to save the lives of innocent civilians in Myanmar," Kyaw Moe Tun told an informal meeting of the Security Council. "Collective strong action is needed immediately. Time is of the essence for us, please take action now." The envoy, who made headlines in February publicly opposing the military coup, called on the international community to target sanctions against the businesses linked to the military and to their families. He also urged the suspension of foreign investments until the democratically elected government is restored. "I wish to stress that the international community and the U.N. Security Council have the responsibility to use all necessary means to … [Read more...] about Myanmar Envoy Appeals for No-Fly Zone, Arms Embargo

The BBC has opened a page on its website for viewers to register their complaints about the extent of the coverage of the death of Prince Philip. The broadcaster said it had opened the page in response to receiving complaints that there was “too much” coverage on the Duke of Edinburgh. I'd bet the vast majority would agree Prince Philip's passing is momentous & should received huge coverage They would also say BLM & the promotion of the pro Trans lobby gets far too much coverage Why then is the @BBC prompting complaints about Prince Philip-but not the others? pic.twitter.com/NSGlOTBtet — Ben Harris-Quinney #Brexit (@B_HQ) April 10, 2021 The dedicated page is found at the top of the broadcaster’s main complaints page . Sheryl Underwood addresses Sharon Osbourne leaving ‘The Talk’
(CNN) Sheryl Underwood is sharing her thoughts about co-host Sharon Osbourne leaving "The Talk" after their fiery debate. "I still love the Osbournes, from what I've known of them," Underwood said in a three-part episode of her podcast "The World According to Sheryl." "I don't know anything other than what I've experienced with them, and this thing that has happened is disappointing to me," Underwood said. "And maybe people don't want to hear me say, 'I still love the Osbournes.' I'm not saying I liked being treated the way I was treated. Let me be clear: I'm very disappointed, and I'm just trying to navigate my feelings about that because it was trauma." On the March 10 episode of "The Talk," Osbourne had an intense debate with Underwood over Osbourne's support of her longtime friend and former "America's Got Talent" co-star Piers Morgan. Morgan had left his job on ITV's "Good Morning Britain" after racism allegations about negative … [Read more...] about Sheryl Underwood addresses Sharon Osbourne leaving ‘The Talk’
