SOUTH BEND — Quarterback Brandon Wimbush won’t have three of his top five receivers when Notre Dame plays LSU in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.Chase Claypool is out with a shoulder injury and Kevin Stepherson has been suspended indefinitely after he and teammate C.J. Holmes were arrested for shoplifting. Then Brian Kelly on Thursday announced that tight end Alize Mack has been suspended for an “internal team matter.”Wimbush was inconsistent this season in the passing game, completing less than 50 percent of his passes in 11 games played. He was promptly benched and replaced by backup Ian Book, who also threw an interception, except his was returned for a touchdown.Miami squashed Notre Dame 41-8 and the Fighting Irish (8-2) turned the ball over four times, three of which came from Wimbush. SOUTH BEND – Brandon Wimbush admits the moment was scary.Before the first-year starting quarterback had his best performance of the season, leading No. 3 Notre Dame to a 48-37 win over Wake Forest on Saturday, he caused a brief panic.The Fighting Irish (8-1) were driving with three minutes left in the second quarter when Wimbush set off for a 28-yard run. He was tackled by linebacker Jaboree Williams at the 1-yard line and didn’t get up. Wimbush was face-down on the wet turf as trainers rushed toward him. After a few minutes, they helped him into the locker room.He did not return to the game with 20 seconds remaining in the half. SOUTH BEND – Brandon Wimbush didn’t seem very impressed with himself when he was told he’d tied Notre Dame’s all-time rushing touchdowns record for a quarterback.“Who has the most passing?” he asked. “I want to go for that one.”That would be Brady Quinn, who completed 929-of-1,602 passes for 11,762 yards with 95 touchdown passes and 39 interceptions from 2003-06.In the seven games Wimbush has played for No. 3 Notre Dame (7-1), he has completed 88-of-170 attempts for 1,006 yards with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has added 529 yards rushing and 11 rushing touchdowns.Wimbush has been successful at finding ways to win with his feet this season.
