Randy Peterson Des Moines Register Published 12:03 AM EDT Mar 17, 2019 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Iowa State sent another loud, clear, strong message at the Sprint Center on Saturday night, its biggest thus far during a season where, quite honestly, its best may be yet to come. Cyclones 78, Kansas 66, in the Big 12 Conference Tournament championship game. Boom. Make room for another trophy, and this one just might be the most impressive of them all. “When we’re together and playing like we did these games, nobody in the country can beat us,” tourney MVP Marial Shayok said. “Once we’re right and we’re playing together, we can beat anybody.” You probably thought Iowa State’s men’s basketball season was, for all practical purposes, a lost cause while it suffered through that late-season drought. You probably thought the Big 12 tournament would be a one-and-done affair. You were wrong. Randy Peterson Des Moines Register Published 2:48 PM EDT Mar 13, 2019 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — You’d think a veteran would be the go-to player when seeking an opinion about Iowa State’s NCAA Tournament seed heading into Thursday’s Big 12 Conference tournament game against Baylor. But in this instance, Mike Jacobson deferred to a freshman. “Ask Tyrese (Haliburton),” Jacobson suggested to me Wednesday. “He’s the guy if you need to know what time a certain game is, who’s playing who — stuff like that. Tyrese always knows. He’s the guy to ask.” So, Tyrese, if you were a bracketologist and you’ve already got Iowa State solidly in the NCAA Tournament, what seed range are you thinking about heading into the 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal at the Sprint Center? “In my opinion ... “ Haliburton rubbed his chin, and then proceeded to rattle off multiple situations, before coming up with this: “After we … [Read more...] about Iowa State looking for confidence, not seeding boost, at Big 12 Conference tournament

Aaron Calvin Des Moines Register Published 6:45 PM EDT Mar 11, 2019 One Kansas City, Missouri, businessman is making a strong case for Iowa State fans to visit his sports bars during this week's Big 12 men's basketball tournament. Chris Lewellen owns The Well and Lew's Grill and Bar, which are located two blocks apart on Wornall Road in the city's Waldo neighborhood. During the tournament, that two-block stretch is being renamed "Welch South" in honor of Ames' Welch Avenue. And he makes a promise to Cyclones fans: "I guarantee we'll never run out of Busch Light!" he said in a news release. That's a nod to the copious amounts of the light beer Iowa State fans reportedly drink while following their team, and the rumor ISU and Washington State fans drank all the Busch Light at the Alamodome during the Alamo Bowl in December. Randy Peterson Des Moines Register Published 1:18 PM EST Feb 10, 2019 AMES, Ia. — Iowa State can go a long way toward making up for Saturday’s dud of a game at home against TCU by winning next Saturday at Kansas State. It wouldn't be total redemption because, as everyone knows, the Big 12 isn’t exactly a forgiving conference. But knock off the league leader on its home court and, just like that, Steve Prohm’s team has taken the first step in returning to title contention in this new-look league race where Kansas State (and not Kansas) is the team everyone’s chasing. “We responded from Baylor and Kansas State (losses) really well. Now, we have to respond from this well,” Prohm said after Saturday’s 92-83 loss at Hilton Coliseum. “It may not be in wins. It may be just playing well. Hopefully, we can go on the road and get it done.” It better be with wins if the Cyclones plan to be … [Read more...] about Big 12 basketball: Kansas State is the team with the target for a change, and not Kansas
