But as hot as the summer box office was this year, the Southern California production economy might even be hotter — or at least stronger. For the moment, at least, its strength is not dependent on the whims of a Han Solo epic, or the latest giant mass-market adventure. All told, summer movies brought in a North American gross of $4.394 billion, up 14.3 percent from summer 2017, according to comScore, the Sherman Oaks-based global media measurement firm that supplied the box-office figures.
