Visit The Boston Globe Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Comment on this Scroll to top of page Ty Burr Globe Staff December 16, 2018 “If Beale Street Could Talk,” an alternately soaring and searing James Baldwin adaptation about a young black couple in early ’70s Manhattan, was named the best movie of 2018 by the Boston Society of Film Critics on Sunday.The film is the latest release from director Barry Jenkins, whose 2016 “Moonlight” won the Oscar for best picture. “If Beale Street Could Talk,” which will be released here on Christmas Day, also won awards for best supporting actress Regina King, as the heroine’s pillar-of-strength mother, and for Nicholas Britell’s sweeping musical score. On Giving Tuesday, the Brattle hosts the local edition of a nationwide event presented by Film Comment and the Art House Convergence – not a bad way to jump into the Marvel films for no cost, and with one of the hottest directors in Hollywood chatting with you afterward. Boston Women’s Film Festival sharpens focus on a group Brattle’s been spotlighting all year
By Tom Meek Tuesday, September 25, 2018A year and a half ago, well before Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement made nation-sweeping headlines, the programing staff at The Brattle Theatre decided to put together a loose, yearlong focus on “Cinema Made By, For and About Women.” The result brought indie stalwart Alison Anders back to the Harvard Square theater for the 25th anniversary of her low-budged classic, “Gas, Food, Lodging.” Earlier, there was a retrospective focused on the woman working behind the scenes in the early days of cinema (“The Women who Built Hollywood”) such as Mary Pickford, who co-founded United Artists; now that vision culminates in the inaugural Boston Women’s Film Festival. Woods Hole Film Festival set to kick off 27th year
Cape Cod’s oldest film festival returns this week for its 27th year with a staggering lineup of almost 50 feature-length films and more than 100 shorts to be screened over the course of the week. The Woods Hole Film Festival begins on July 28 and runs through Aug. 4 with screenings at five different venues in Woods Hole and Falmouth largely centered around topics exploring music and science. Five feature-length films and 28 shorts will have their world premiere at the film festival, and more than half the films in the festival were submitted by first-time filmmakers hailing from all over the globe. Among the lineup is “Chet’s Last Call,’’ a documentary about Richard “Chet’’ Rooney and the underground Boston music scene of the 1980s that came out of a punk rock dive bar.
