BOSTON -- Red Sox manager Alex Cora on Sept. 19 mentioned his plan to use Craig Kimbrel differently during the final 12 games of the regular season. He wanted to bring in the closer earlier than the ninth inning to record more than three outs in an outing as a way to prepare him for more demanding postseason usage. It never happened. Kimbrel appeared in four games the final two weeks. He never pitched more than an inning. He hurled the ninth in the Red Sox's 10-2 win over the Yankees here Sunday. The Red Sox closed out the regular season 108-54. They will host either the Yankees or Athletics in Game 1 of the ALDS on Friday. Cora said Sept. 19, "There's X-amount of innings we're going to use him the rest of the season. It all depends on how the games goes and all that. We also talk about how to use him in different spots so he can get used to the fact of get up early (to warm) and come in probably earlier in the game. Obviously we don't have … [Read more...] about Alex Cora’s plan to use Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel differently during final 2 weeks never happened; Why?

BOSTON -- Red Sox manager Alex Cora said his ALDS roster vs. either the Athletics or Yankees will consist of 14 position players and 11 pitchers. He still has two roster decisions remaining, the final two bullpen spots. The Yankees and Athletics will play a one-game Wild Card playoff Wednesday. The winner plays the Red Sox in Game 1 of the ALDS here at Fenway Park next Friday. Cora said he'll use "probably the same" roster whether the Red Sox face Oakland or New York. Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello, Nathan Eovaldi, Eduardo Rodriguez, Craig Kimbrel, Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier and Steven Wright all appear to be locks to make the roster. Brandon Workman, Joe Kelly, Brian Johnson, Heath Hembree and Bobby Poyner likely are still competing for the final two spots. Cora acknowledged some conversations with players left off the roster will be tough. "That's part of it," Cora said. "Everybody knows that it's 25 guys. Is it fair? No. But it's nature. We go back to 25 … [Read more...] about Boston Red Sox ALDS roster: Alex Cora to take 14 position players, 11 pitchers vs. either Yankees or Athletics
BOSTON -- Red Sox ace Chris Sale needs better extension toward home plate. The lefty's velocity has dropped since his return from the DL (shoulder inflammation). His four-seam fastball averaged only 90.2 mph Wednesday vs. the Orioles. He also has struggled with his mechanics. Both a decrease in velocity and mechanics likely are connected. "It's a big difference with him," manager Alex Cora said about Sale's extension. "Think about him just extending regardless of the velocity. It's a different angle. I think him and the kid from Tampa, (Blake) Snell, they are the most uncomfortable angle from the left side in the big leagues. So when he can create that, there's more with the fastball actually. The fastball up, it's a late decision (to swing or not). You don't see it well." Cora said better extension also makes Sale's slider much better. Boston Globe's Alex Speier reported, "Sale's average extension at his release point was 5.97 feet toward the plate.
