Two groups of liberal-progressive Tories are pressuring Boris Johnson to “follow President Biden’s lead” and give all young people £500 in coronavirus recovery funds, which would cost the taxpayer an estimated £2.8 billion. Last month, the U.S. Congress passed the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, which contains the third round of $1,400 stimulus cheques. The One Nation Caucus and the Tory Reform Group have urged a similar “Covid relief payment” to young adults, calling them one of those “worse hit financially by the pandemic”. “The government should consider following President Biden’s lead and issue Covid relief payments for those worse [sic] affected by the pandemic. A £500 stimulus for every 18-24 year old in the UK, one of the age groups worst affected, would cost around £2.8 billion,” the groups suggested in the report published on Monday. If the government adopts the proposals, it would add to Britain’s already-spiralling debt. The UK’s debt … [Read more...] about CORONABUCKS: Now UK ‘Conservatives’ Want to Give All Young People £500

PM May in USA: Prez Sez Brexit ‘Will Be a Fantastic Thing’
US President Donald J. Trump and UK Prime Minister Theresa May have reaffirmed their commitment to the special relationship between their two countries, with the new President telling the White House press conference that “Brexit is going to be a wonderful thing for your country”. Speaking in a questions and answers after the two leaders made a joint statement on the renewal of the special relationship at the White House this afternoon, President Trump took a question from the British press on Brexit, and came out strongly in favour of the vote and Britain liberating itself from what he called the “consortium” European Union (EU). President Trump said: “We will be talking to your folks about Brexit, [which is] an example of what was to come. I happened to be in Scotland… when Brexit happened, and we had a vast amount of press there. The day before, I said ‘Brexit is gonna happen’, and I was scorned for making that prediction”. Praising the decision for Britain to leave the EU, … [Read more...] about PM May in USA: Prez Sez Brexit ‘Will Be a Fantastic Thing’
The US could have 300M extra vaccines. Why won’t it share?
A version of this story appeared in the April 14 edition of CNN's Coronavirus: Fact vs. Fiction newsletter. Sign up here to receive the need-to-know headlines every weekday . (CNN) The United States could have around 300 million excess Covid-19 shots by the end of July, health policy experts at Duke University estimated in a report Thursday , calling on the country to share doses more widely to address the stark inequality around global vaccine distribution. The US has provided limited shipments of AstraZeneca's vaccine -- which is not yet authorized for use in the United States -- to Mexico and Canada, but US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said it won't share shots more broadly until the country is "more confident" in its own supplies . The US is the biggest financial donor to the global vaccine-sharing scheme COVAX, but the country has been tight-fisted with the actual vaccines it has in huge supply, while many others have none at all. British Debt Breaks £2 Trillion Mark for First Time Amid Pandemic
LONDON (AP) — Britain’s government debt has breached the 2 trillion-pound ($2.6 trillion) mark for the first time after heavy borrowing to support the economy during the coronavirus pandemic. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said Friday that the government borrowed a further 26.7 billion pounds in July, the fourth-highest amount of any month since records began in 1993. That pushed up debt to 2.004 trillion pounds. The increase also means that the country’s debt is now higher than the value of its economic output. The UK’s debt is worth 100.5 per cent of its annual GDP, the first time it has gone beyond 100 per cent since 1961. The deterioration in the public finances is due to the massive support schemes the government has put in place over the past few months to cope with the economic shock of the pandemic, which has already seen the British economy shrink by around a fifth. The government has cut an array of taxes and spent heavily, notably on a widely used salary … [Read more...] about British Debt Breaks £2 Trillion Mark for First Time Amid Pandemic
European Super League crumbles after majority of teams announce withdrawal
(CNN) One by one, they began to fall. First it was Manchester City and then, like dominoes, the other five Premier League clubs soon followed, before none were left in the so-called European Super League . The dramatic collapse of the multibillion-dollar league came less than 48 hours after it was first launched. In a video posted on Liverpool's social media channels on Wednesday morning, club owner John W. Henry, thought to be one of the principal drivers behind the Super League, cut a contrite figure. "I want to apologize to all the fans, supporters of Liverpool Football Club for the disruption I caused over the last 48 hours," he said. "It goes without saying, but should be said, that the project put forward was never going to stand without the fans. No one ever thought differently in England. And I want to apologize to … [Read more...] about European Super League crumbles after majority of teams announce withdrawal
