CALEXICO, Calif. — The Wall is all that stands in their way.On the other side, there are jobs, money and freedom — and the allure of such opportunity is irresistible. So they climb. The two men are from the Mexican state of Guerrero, which means they’ve traveled more than 1,800 miles to illegally enter the United States. One of them hopes to find a job in construction. The other plans to work in landscaping or the fields of the Imperial Valley, an agriculture mecca on the edge of the Sonoran Desert. They set out from Mexicali, just across the border, on an overcast Wednesday morning, not even bothering to wait for the cover of darkness. A few miles outside of town, they approach a remote stretch of The Wall.It takes only a few minutes to scale the border fence, wedging their feet between the bollards as they pull themselves up. Joel Shannon USA TODAY Published 11:32 PM EST Feb 12, 2019 U.S. prosecutors are seeking to seize billions of dollars in assets connected to convicted drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Tuesday that he believes the money should be used to build a border wall with Mexico. In reference to Guzmán's conviction on 10 criminal counts — including drug trafficking, weapons violations and operating a continuing criminal enterprise — Cruz tweeted: "U.S. prosecutors are seeking $14 billion in drug profits & other assets from El Chapo which should go towards funding our wall to #SecureTheBorder." It's a nod to a previously introduced bill, CNN reports. The "EL CHAPO Act" — or "Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order Act" — was first introduced in April 2017 and reintroduced in January of this year, the network reports. "The bill would reserve any amounts … [Read more...] about Ted Cruz: El Chapo’s money should pay for a border wall with Mexico
opinion Hector Avalos Iowa View contributor Published 5:37 PM EST Jan 25, 2019 In his guest column this month, Todd Blodgett asserts: “It's time to listen to those who are actually on the border.” I am a Mexican immigrant. I was born and lived in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. I went to my first two years of school there. My parents bought a home on the American side. I go back occasionally. Blodgett quotes Raul Ortiz, the chief of the U.S. Border Patrol for the Rio Grande Valley sector: “Come walk in my shoes.” That hardly counts as compelling evidence for “the wall.” Indeed, Blodgett never defines “the wall” because President Donald Trump does not have a stable definition in the first place. On June 15, 2015, Trump said: “I will build a great wall ― and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me ― and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will … [Read more...] about Trump’s arguments for border wall with Mexico are full of holes

WASHINGTON—President Trump called the Senate spending bill “ridiculous” on Thursday, demanding that Republicans do more to ensure greater funding for border security, particularly for his proposed border wall with Mexico.
