Their labor helped to create global capitalism and has transformed American food production, animal farming and cooking. Yet their ability to accumulate wealth, land, businesses and income based on their agricultural prowess has been halted at every turn, at times by brute force, most often by acts of systemic racism. Black-Asian solidarity has a long and storied history in America
Van Jones is a CNN host and founder of Dream Corps. The views expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) On Friday, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Atlanta to confront the racial hatred that is forcing millions of people of Asian descent to live in daily fear. The trip comes on the heels of Tuesday's carnage -- in which a White man in Atlanta killed eight people, including six Asian women. Though the motive has not yet been established, this shooting spree follows a pattern of increasing violence against Asian Americans, particularly women and elders. Harris herself is of South Asian descent and has long been a champion of racial justice. Meanwhile, Biden has continually reinforced his commitment to racial justice through his speeches, interviews and statements. And earlier this month, both the White House and Department of Justice hosted listening sessions with leaders in the Asian American and … [Read more...] about Black-Asian solidarity has a long and storied history in America
Black women delivered for Biden. Now it’s time for Congress to deliver on a $15 minimum wage
Rebecca Dixon is executive director of the National Employment Law Project. The opinions expressed in this commentary are her own. "Thank Black women" has become a familiar refrain from Democratic lawmakers , who are eager to pay lip service to their fiercest, most reliable voting bloc. Black women helped deliver the presidency and the Senate to the Democrats, who ran on the promise of a $15 an hour minimum wage, among other things. Now they must do what they can to deliver on that promise. Democrats tried to include a $15 minimum wage in the American Rescue Plan , but were forced to leave it out. They have another opportunity with the Raise the Wage Act , which would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour over five years and help decrease both the racial and gender wealth gaps that Black women face. This represents a relatively easy fix to a deeply insidious problem. Congress must pass this act, and the White House must lead the way. Raising … [Read more...] about Black women delivered for Biden. Now it’s time for Congress to deliver on a $15 minimum wage

Housing isn’t a marquee part of the $2.5 trillion proposal Biden unveiled last week, dubbed the American Jobs Plan, as the next step of his economic recovery agenda. Dorothy Brown: ‘The System for Wealth Building Is Designed to Build White Wealth’
Photo: Ann Watson How often do you think about your taxes? Once a year, maybe, when it’s time to file, or when you got married, or when you bought a home? If you’re white, taxes are often an inconvenience at worst. The tax code may even benefit you when you get married and start filing a joint return. If you’re Black, says Emory University law professor Dorothy Brown, your story is likely different: The joint return is less likely to reward a marriage with a tax cut when two spouses of equal income work outside the home, something that’s more likely to be true of Black couples. That’s not an accident, she argues in her new book, The Whiteness of Wealth . Well-off, mostly white Americans litigated and lobbied their way into making sure the tax code protects their wealth. Black Americans, who typically lack family wealth, were left out and deliberately held back. They can’t catch up, and that’s the point. The system is working as designed for whom it was designed: white Americans. … [Read more...] about Dorothy Brown: ‘The System for Wealth Building Is Designed to Build White Wealth’
