DENVER (CBS4) – Colorado health officials say they studied what they call “breakthrough cases” of Coloradans who got the coronavirus after getting vaccinated. State epidemiologist says the state recorded 819 breakthrough cases out of 106,965 total cases from the end of January through April 19. (credit: CBS) “These cases represent a very small portion of positive COVID-19 cases and are no more than expected based on known vaccine efficacy levels. Vaccination is our ticket out of this pandemic,” said Colorado State Epidemiologist Rachel Herlihy. State Department Warns Americans: Do Not Travel to 80% of Countries Because of Coronavirus
The U.S. State Department announced on Monday that it will post “Do not Travel” guidance covering 80 percent of countries worldwide because of the coronavirus more than one year after the China-originated virus spread around the world. These are in addition to the 34 countries out of 200 countries that the State Department already has on the Level Four “Do Not Travel” list. Some of those 34 countries include Chad, Kosovo, Kenya, Brazil, Argentina, Haiti, Mozambique, Russia, and Tanzania. 80 percent represents about 130 countries in all. Reuters reported on the development: The State Department said the move does not imply a reassessment of current health situations in some countries, but rather “reflects an adjustment in the State Department’s Travel Advisory system to rely more on (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s) (CDC) existing epidemiological assessments.” Most Americans were already prevented from traveling to much of Europe because of COVID-19 … [Read more...] about State Department Warns Americans: Do Not Travel to 80% of Countries Because of Coronavirus
Coronavirus outbreak in Kentucky nursing home linked to R.1 variant, prompts concern over vaccine impact

A so-called R.1 coronavirus lineage variant was detected in an outbreak at a Kentucky nursing facility where nearly all residents were vaccinated, according to one of the latest reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Health departments noted that coronavirus infections cropped up in a quarter of vaccinated residents, raising concerns about vaccine impact. The unnamed skilled nursing facility offered all residents and staff vaccinations beginning in January, with 90.4% of 83 residents taking up a vaccine and just over half of staffers accepting doses as well. An investigation by the Kentucky Department of Public Health revealed an unvaccinated, infected staffer initiated the outbreak in early March, ultimately … [Read more...] about Coronavirus outbreak in Kentucky nursing home linked to R.1 variant, prompts concern over vaccine impact
Steve Scalise’s Ignorant, Racist Case Against D.C. Statehood
Graphic: Sarah Silbiger/Getty Images The District of Columbia spent years struggling to get out from under the thumb of Congress and achieve some measure of political autonomy for its residents. The first step in this process was wresting control of the city’s budget from Congress and turning it over to its mayor and city council in the 1990s. The current struggle is to give its citizens statehood. The through-line of this history is that conservative white Southerners in Congress insist that the city’s heavily Black population is unfit for self-governance. The most recent iteration comes in a memo circulated by House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, first reported by Andrew Solender . On the surface, Scalise is following the usual pattern of anti-statehood arguments, which consist of devising some distinction between D.C. and other small states, either real (D.C. can’t be a state because it lacks a mine ) or imagined (D.C. supposedly lacks a car dealership ), and then … [Read more...] about Steve Scalise’s Ignorant, Racist Case Against D.C. China to Flood World Market with Billions of Doses of Its Low Protection Rate Vaccines
Chinese officials announced Tuesday that Chinese companies manufacturing vaccine candidates against the Chinese coronavirus would significantly increase their production capacity to export billions of doses around the world. The announcement, made at the Communist Party-led Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), followed an admission by the director of China’s Center for Disease Control (CDC), Gao Fu, this month, that Chinese-made coronavirus vaccines “don’t have very high protection rates.” It also comes amid concerns that Chinese citizens are not receiving vaccinations at rates equivalent to other large countries, in part due to distrust of the country’s vaccine manufacturers, leaving China exposed to deadly coronavirus outbreaks. The Boao Forum is an economic summit meant to bring together Chinese allies to discuss the expansion of trade ties with Beijing. The Communist Party is expecting to attract 200 million tourists for concerts and other super-spreader events for May 1, the … [Read more...] about China to Flood World Market with Billions of Doses of Its Low Protection Rate Vaccines
