SAN ANTONIO, Texas — While the Villanova players and coaches lingered in an Alamodome locker room late Monday, black NCAA Champions baseball caps on their heads and iPhones in their hands, the commissioner of the Big East Conference made a momentary move from the periphery of the celebration to its center. Leaning on its edge was a wall-sized whiteboard with a depiction of the 2018 NCAA tournament bracket on it, with the word VILLANOVA at the bracket’s center, and Val Ackerman held the championship trophy in front of it for a photograph. Ackerman had, for her own reasons, as much cause for delight as anyone in the room. She had overseen the Big East’s reconstitution in 2013 from a 16-school powerhouse to a league of 10 private schools that prioritized basketball over football, and in the aftermath of Villanova’s second national title in three years, the symbiosis between the conference and its crown-jewel program has never been clearer. Villanova is elevating … [Read more...] about The greatness of Villanova and Jay Wright has elevated the new Big East, and the new Big East has elevated them
The Creighton women’s basketball team played two games at D.J. Sokol Arena this past weekend, picking up two victories as they make a push for the NCAA Tournament. The Bluejays (17-9, 11-5 Big East) ended the week on Sunday with a victory on Senior Day, 64-55, against the Butler Bulldogs (14-15, 6-11 Big East). Seniors Kylie Brown, Sydney Lamberty, Myah Mellman, Bailey Norby and Aimee Rischard were honored by being the starting five for the game. The Jays led from start to finish, jumping out to an early 9-0 lead, and never looked back. “I thought we won with our defense,” Creighton coach Jim Flanery said. “We had stretches where offensively we were effective and Audrey got going in the second half. We made just enough baskets, they guarded us well but we guarded them really well.” Creighton would take a 25-20 lead into halftime and the Bulldogs would make it 25-23 to open the half but would get no closer. The Jays responded with a 12-0 run and never let … [Read more...] about Women’s basketball holds third place in the Big East

I was looking up the details of Sherburn’s state basketball championship in 1970 on microfilm a few years ago. This was the last one-class state tournament in Minnesota basketball. The most-amazing thing discovered in going through the Morning Tribune’s sports sections from that weekend was this: To be reminded of what an afterthought the NCAA basketball tournament was at that time. There was a 25-team bracket – conference champions and a number Independents invited as at-large entries. The Final Four was played in Cole Field House, an arena with a capacity slightly above 14,000 on the campus of the University of Maryland. Four years earlier, Cole had been home to Texas Western’s (now UTEP) upset of Kentucky in the national title game. That was a dramatic event in this nation’s sports history, since it was Western’s all-black lineup against Adolph Rupp’s still-segregated Kentucky team. The Final Four was a Thursday-Saturday event in 1970. The … [Read more...] about Yeah, Villanova. Hallelujah, Big East. You have it right.
