A stranger knocks on the door. The older woman who answers the door is informed that the visitor is now her legal guardian and will make all decisions for her. Within days, the older woman has been placed in a nursing home and her home sold so that the stranger may profit. It’s a perfect opening for a psychological thriller. In fact, it is the opening for Netflix’s new featured movie “ I Care a Lot ,” starring Rosamund Pike as Marla, a ruthlessly ambitious woman who has made a business out of exploiting older adults. Her method: petitioning a local court to appoint her as emergency guardian for older adults whom she alleges cannot make decisions for themselves. Unfortunately, the plot of “I Care a Lot” — despite its share of plot twists and theatrics — is not as far-fetched as it might seem. Every state allows courts to appoint a third party (called a “guardian” or “conservator”) to make decisions for someone the court determines is at risk because they lack the ability to make … [Read more...] about Netflix’s ‘I Care a Lot’ should worry you

Dover MP Calls for Illegal Migrants to Be Put on Same Quarantine ‘Red List’ as Legitimate Travellers
The Member of Parliament for the Port of Dover has called for illegal migrants to be put on the same quarantine “red list” as legitimate travellers, including British citizens, entering the United Kingdom from high-risk countries. Despite having refused to put controls on travel from coronavirus epicentres such as Italy, Iran, South Korea, China, and even Wuhan itself in the early stages of the pandemic, the Boris Johnson administration has now created a ‘red list’ of some 33 countries from which travel is banned, except for British citizens and residents, who are required to quarantine in hotels upon return. Backbench MPs are now questioning why this regime is not applied to illegal migrants, many of whom arrive on packed people-smuggler boats and may be from, or have been in contact with people from red list countries. Coronavirus infection rates in northern France are 15 higher than in Dover. “I would like to see a compulsory period of quarantine in order to reduce the … [Read more...] about Dover MP Calls for Illegal Migrants to Be Put on Same Quarantine ‘Red List’ as Legitimate Travellers

Leftist political parties abandoned the working class for globalization
Since the 19th century, the fundamental structure of politics in Europe and America has been the contest between left and right — liberal v. conservative — to shape and reshape the societies in which they operated. The historic mission of parties of the left — Socialists in continental Europe, Labour in Britain, Democrats in America — has been to champion and uplift the living conditions of the working classes who were the majority population in every country. Today this traditional paradigm, by varying degrees, has fractured or even collapsed in nearly every Western country as political parties of the left become enablers of the new economic order we call “globalization.” In a seminal Guardian article in December 2018, French sociologist Christophe Guilluy wrote : “From the 1980s onward it was clear there was a price to be paid for Western societies adapting to a new economic model — and that price was sacrificing the European and American working class. No one thought the … [Read more...] about Leftist political parties abandoned the working class for globalization
