Education for Native Youth Is a Work in Progress

· December 3, 2019 ·

WASHINGTON - Some Native American children fear bullying and harassment so much, they hide their ethnicity at school, according to an education expert.  “A lot of Native students feel invisible,” said Katrina Boone, an associate partner at Bellwether Education Partners, a national nonprofit whose mission is to change education and life outcomes for underserved children. Boone said many students have told her they don't feel comfortable letting their teachers know they are Native American because they have “been harassed and bullied, not just by peers, but by teachers in school.” Native American students languish in schools across the country and often face worse outcomes than their white, black and Latino peers, she said. And the rates of high school and post-graduation trends are below the rates of their peers. The suicide rate for Native youth exceeds the rate of their peers, Boone said. And national data indicate that rates for illicit drug use and … [Read more...] about Education for Native Youth Is a Work in Progress

Rep. Warren Davidson: Socialist ‘Medicare-for-all’ is wrong direction for America

· May 4, 2019 ·

close Video Democrats hold first hearing on 'Medicare-for-all' rollout. Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier breaks down the health care legislation. Socialism claims to promote equality and prosperity, but the fruit of socialism is scarcity. I know because I witnessed the effects of socialist policy first-hand. Stationed in Germany, I saw the failures of this ideology and the faces of those who survived it. Thanks to West German television, East Germans knew about Western culture but could never experience it. After the Berlin Wall fell, East Germans were shocked and amazed because they had never seen a grocery store with so many choices of fresh food and produce. They also did not understand the concept of the Soviet, state-run economy limited workers’ ability to earn a better life. Educated citizens, determined to find better opportunities, fled at the risk of being murdered by border guards. Socialism delivers no utopia. BERNIE INTRODUCES NEW … [Read more...] about Rep. New 2016 Autopsies: It Was the Obama-Trump Voters, in the Rust Belt, With the Economic Anxiety

· May 2, 2017 ·

Analyze this. Photo: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images For about half a year now, progressives have been squabbling about how to explain the tragic events of November 8. These internecine arguments have sometimes centered on a pair of related questions: 1. Was Clinton’s defeat caused primarily by a failure of persuasion (Obama voters flipping to Trump) or one of mobilization (Democratic voters staying home, while “missing white voters” flocked to the GOP standard-bearer)? 2. To the extent that Trump did win over some white Obama voters, did he do so by activating their racial resentment, or their longing for economic change (a.k.a. “economic anxiety”)? Debate over these questions was rarely characterized by a spirit of coolheaded empiricism. And not without reason — each answer seemed pregnant with profound ideological and political implications. Some progressives saw explanations that centered the economic concerns of Obama-Trump voters as … [Read more...] about New 2016 Autopsies: It Was the Obama-Trump Voters, in the Rust Belt, With the Economic Anxiety
