There's no longer any reason for the average homeowner or apartment dweller not to have a security system. That's especially true given that the days of expensive installations and long-term contracts are over, while software vendors offer an ever-widening array of DIY tools to protect the home front. These days, the emerging "smart home" category is dominated by security systems like Canary and Piper. One of the newest entrants, Myfox, has a fairly complete and generally effective package, although it's pricey. Systems like Piper and Canary are one-piece solutions that pack a camera, various sensors, and a siren into a Pringles-can-like canister. Myfox takes a very different approach. More like a traditional home security system, the basic Myfox package contains a hub, siren, door sensor and key fob; the camera (as well as additional sensors and fobs) are optional. The hub and siren are two different components. You plug the small hub into an outlet and then follow a simple setup … [Read more...] about Home security tool is easy to use, but pricey

The Internet of Things (IoT), which connects various devices to each other and the cloud, is expected to be a huge growth market over the next few years. IDC expects IoT spending to rise from over $800 billion in 2017 to nearly $1.4 trillion in 2021, and Gartner sees the number of connected devices jumping from 8.4 billion in 2017 to 20.4 billion in 2020. There are plenty of large cap companies, like networking giant Cisco and chipmaker Intel, that offer investors exposure to the IoT market. However, investors should also check out small cap plays in this market, which offer much more upside potential than their "mature tech" peers. Image source: Getty Images. Here are three small cap IoT stocks you should keep an eye on: Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR), CalAmp (NASDAQ: CAMP), and Alarm.com (NASDAQ: ALRM). A "pure play" on M2M communications Sierra Wireless is the world's largest manufacturer of 2G, 3G, and 4G embedded modules and gateways, which are all essential for M2M … [Read more...] about The 3 Best Small-Cap Internet of Things Stocks

Before you buy any "smart" gadgets, make sure they're not dumb. This holiday season, a third of Americans plan to buy a smart home device, according to the Consumer Technology Association. And nearly half of Americans use digital voice assistants, according to the Pew Research Center. But just hooking up the Internet to a door lock, kettle or dog bowl (yes, that's a thing) doesn't make it smart. The trick is figuring out which ones are worth the cost, trouble and inevitable security risks. I've been in those weeds. After reviewing dozens of smart home products, I've learned to be skeptical of any gadget that feels like a Star Trek prop -- and a little paranoid about things that are listening, watching or collecting data. Any gadget you install in your house should work with software from multiple tech giants. And it should be made by a company with years of experience in homes, or at least with top-notch customer support. The good news is some of these connected gadgets are now … [Read more...] about Review: 5 smart home gadgets worth the cost, setup, security risks
Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) recently acquired Blink, a start-up that makes wireless cameras, for an undisclosed sum. Blink's wireless home-security systems are powered by batteries instead of electrical outlets. Blink sells its cameras on Amazon -- a one-camera unit costs $99, while a three-camera set costs $229. It also recently introduced a video doorbell. A press release stated that Blink will "continue to operate under the Amazon umbrella" while "selling and supporting the same great products you know and love." It didn't say anything about integrating its cameras into Amazon's ecosystem, but Amazon likely has big plans for its little cameras. Image source: Blink. With the recent iCloud hack, I’m worried about putting my information in any cloud service. Is it possible to keep my personal information safe online? It’s true that plenty of online services have been hacked, resulting in the release of personal nude photos of celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence, but in many cases – like iCloud – the weak point is actually the user’s passwords and security questions. If you set up a strong password and security question that will reduce a lot of the risk. You also want to be sure to use unique passwords on every account so a breach at one account doesn’t put others at risk. Also, you should also understand what files actually benefit from using the cloud. This may be done by asking, “Will I use this file on my smartphone or laptop?” and “Do I need to share this file easily?” In some cases, you may decide it is not important to even bother putting it out there in the first place. I am a mom … [Read more...] about Tech Q&A: Worried about your nude photos in the cloud?

However, our picks and opinions are independent from USA TODAY’s newsroom and any business incentives.Picture a security camera, and you'll probably think of bulky, ugly cameras that save video to a memory card. They don’t look good in our homes, which means we often try to hide them away in a corner. But the Nest Cam IQ is different. As security cameras go, the Nest Cam IQ looks beautiful. It comes in a crisp, clean white color with a very minimalist package. It's held up by a narrow stem and only has one lone power cable. Heck, even the charger looks gorgeous. But for as pretty as this camera is, it costs $299 and doesn’t seem to raise the bar as high above other cameras as Nest claims it does. That's especially true when compared to Nest’s $199 Cam Indoor and $199 Cam Outdoor. It … [Read more...] about I tried Nest’s new face-detecting security camera—here’s what I thought

Our picks and opinions are independent from USA TODAY's newsroom and any business incentives.Over the past few years, security cameras have come a long way from their direct-to-VHS origins. Today’s security cameras are smarter, using motion detection to tell when something unusual is happening and WiFi connections to send you phone alerts. Many also back up clips to the cloud, so even if a thief steals your camera, you still have the evidence you need. There are other benefits to these smarter cameras: two-way communication, built-in sirens, and even integration with third-party security services can be found in some models. But not all smart security cameras have the features you need, and some do a better job of implementing them than others. Then there are costs to consider—both the up-front … [Read more...] about The best smart indoor security cameras to protect your home

However, our picks and opinions are independent from USA TODAY’s newsroom and any business incentives.Security cameras aren't a new idea. For years, they’ve been watching you and recording your every move at shops, movie theaters, and public parks. But home security cameras have come a long way in the past few years, including those designed to be installed outdoors.Like many other electronic devices, today’s outdoor security cameras are smarter than their ancestors. Tied to the cloud, they can send alerts to your phone the moment someone approaches your door, or tip you off when they spot suspicious activity in your yard. Many also function as two-way communicators, letting you talk to visitors, tell solicitors to buzz off, or scare away other, even more unwanted “guests.”But … [Read more...] about Protect your home with the best smart outdoor security cameras
