When Rick Bragg told his mother that his new book about her would be titled "The Best Cook in the World," Margaret Bragg protested: "I wasn't even the best cook that lived on our road."Bragg writes, "I told her we couldn't call it 'The Third-Best Cook on Roy Webb Road' because that just didn't sing."Wisecracks aside, Bragg's deep love for his mother, and her cooking, shines throughout the book. And anyone else whose mother is also the best cook in the world knows just how he feels."The Best Cook in the World" is about family, and food, and the South, and all the intricate connections among them. Bragg grew up in northeastern Alabama, where his mother still lives in "a cedar cabin, which rises, like it grew there, from the ancient rocks, oaks, and scaly-bark trees in the lee of Bean Flat Mountain, in the hilly north of Calhoun County."His people were farmers and blue-collar workers who coped through the generations with poverty and loss, but who were blessed with a gift for storytelling … [Read more...] about Review: Rick Bragg’s ‘The Best Cook in the World’ a loving food memoir about his mother

By his own admission, Rick Bragg couldn't bake a decent biscuit if you held a shotgun to his head and made him do it. Frying chicken is lost on him, too. So is fixing cornbread. But his mother, Margaret Bragg, now, that woman can cook. Meatloaf. Collard greens. Mashed potatoes. Creamed onions. Chicken and dressing. Poke sallet. Redeye gravy. Butter rolls. Pecan pie. Sweet potato cobbler. And, oh, those pinto beans with ham bone. "Pinto beans and ham, that's like our Holy Grail," Bragg says. "We had it over the weekend. Mom just whipped it together one afternoon." The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of the bestsellers "All Over but the Shoutin'" and "Ava's Man" shares many of his 81-year-old mother's favorite dishes, and the colorful stories behind them, in his new memoir-cookbook, "The Best Cook in the World: Tales from My Momma's Table," which comes out Tuesday, April 24. Bragg will sign copies of his new book that same evening at the Alabama Booksmith in Homewood, and he … [Read more...] about Rick Bragg and ‘The Best Cook in the World’

To call something a "Black Swan" is to say that it is very, very rare. And what could be rarer than the world's FINEST restaurant? Mark Phillips has saved us a table: To beat a path to the door of the "Best Restaurant in the World," you first have to find the door. Somewhere down the winding country lanes of the English county of North Yorkshire is a place even the GPS can't find. And the owners of the Black Swan, in a little hamlet called Oldstead, like it that way. "I love where I'm from," said chef Tommy Banks. "I love the fact that people have to travel to the village that I grew up in to eat my food." And, boy, have they been travelling lately. Ever since Banks' little family-run country-pub was surprisingly named, yes, the Best Restaurant in the World by Trip Advisor, an award based not on the opinion of food critics but on a secret algorithm of Internet posts by normal customers. Just ask Bethany: "It's great to be able for the past few weeks or so to say to friends … [Read more...] about A visit to the Black Swan, the Best Restaurant in the World
We have questions-and-answers this morning for movie star Great Gerwig, who's now taken a commanding role OFF-camera. She's been talking to our Tony Dokoupil: Enter a Sacramento coffee shop with Greta Gerwig and you might be surprised what happens. "Nothing. Nothing will happen," she laughed. In her hometown, Gerwig doesn't yet get mobbed in public -- and she helpfully spells her name for the barista. Until this year, the 34-year-old was probably best known as an actor, with roles opposite Ben Stiller ("Greenberg"), Annette Bening ("20th Century Women"), and Natalie Portman ("Jackie"). But now, she's written and directed "Lady Bird," starring Saoirse Ronan, a movie praised as "perfect" by some critics and celebrated as the best-reviewed movie of all time on the sometimes surly film website Rotten Tomatoes. "I don't typically read reviews while it's going on," she said. "You must be aware," Dokoupil said. "I'm aware. I'm definitely aware!" Ronan plays an artsy Sacramento teenager … [Read more...] about Greta Gerwig on directing: “It’s the best feeling in the world”
