It’s official: Bay Area is the last place in the US with rent below pre-pandemic levels
The Bay Area is the last place in the U.S. with rental prices below pre-pandemic levels, according to a new report from Apartment List . That seems like a rosy headline — for us renters at least — but the question remains how long the “depressed” prices will last. New data estimates rents in the San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley area are still down 3.3% compared with March 2020 and the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara area is down 1.3%. Meanwhile, nationwide rental prices have climbed more than 16% in just the past year, with big cities in Florida such as Miami climbing 34% since the month the pandemic shut down much of the U.S. In a separate report , Apartment List put median rent for a one-bedroom in San Francisco at $2,390 in April — a mere 0.7% month-over-month increase, but a 12.1% increase year-over-year. Experts predict there are a number of factors affecting these still-shrunken prices, one of which being that the Bay Area has one of the most remote-friendly workforces. … [Read more...] about It’s official: Bay Area is the last place in the US with rent below pre-pandemic levels
Bull escapes Northern California rodeo arena, injures bystanders
Five people were injured when a bull escaped an arena during a popular Northern California rodeo Friday night, authorities said Sunday. The bull jumped over a fence and into a crowd of attendees before escaping the rodeo grounds during the final section of the Redding Rodeo’s bull riding event, the Redding Rodeo Association said in a Facebook post . Rodeo livestock professionals captured the bull near the Sundial Bridge — about half a mile from the arena — and immediately placed the animal in a trailer, the association said. “The bull did not buck again at the Redding Rodeo and was taken back to his ranch,” a spokesperson for the association said in a statement Sunday. Emergency personnel and law enforcement officials provided aid to the wounded individuals, the statement said. The bull injured five people, including one wounded near the Sundial Bridge and taken to a hospital for their minor injuries, the association spokesperson said. Another victim was injured near the … [Read more...] about Bull escapes Northern California rodeo arena, injures bystanders
The Massive Screwup That Could Let COVID Bypass Our Vaccines
After weeks at a two-year low, COVID cases are on the rise again in some countries. In the United States, there were 100,000 daily new infections, on average–up from 30,000 in mid-March. The trend is intensifying an important debate in epidemiological circles. What’s the best strategy for preventing catastrophic mass death from the worst possible new COVID variants ? New restrictions? New vaccines? New therapies? A mix of the three? Whatever consensus takes shape could guide us into the pandemic’s fourth year. But there’s a catch, of course. Public-health costs money. And in the world’s richest country, the United States, a few right-wing politicians are doing their damndest to make sure no new money is available to speed up development, production and distribution of new vaccines and therapies. Vaccine development is stalling. China is still pushing locally-made vaccines that don’t work very well. The leading Western vaccine-manufacturers are focusing on developing boosters … [Read more...] about The Massive Screwup That Could Let COVID Bypass Our Vaccines

Column: A teachable moment — and the true meaning of Jackie Robinson’s legacy to Black baseball players
Jackie Robinson was in headlines this weekend when New York Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson referred to Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson as “Jackie” during Saturday’s game, igniting a brouhaha between the two teams. Whether Donaldson was joking around, as he insisted, or used Robinson’s name in a “racist” manner, as Sox manager Tony La Russa claimed, it was certain to be a hot button debate throughout baseball. No matter where you stand on the issue, there’s no arguing Jackie Robinson’s name remains as relevant in baseball today as he was when he broke the major-league color barrier 75 years ago. If cooler heads prevail, this could be a teachable moment for Donaldson and anyone else trying to understand why using Robinson’s name was considered “disrespectful” by Anderson and “racist” by La Russa. Robinson endured slights both public and private throughout his career, as most fans surely know. The mere idea of a Black man entering the majors was such a … [Read more...] about Column: A teachable moment — and the true meaning of Jackie Robinson’s legacy to Black baseball players
How sidearm reliever Scott Effross developed into a weapon for the Chicago Cubs: ‘He’s not fazed by the moment’
When Chicago Cubs reliever Scott Effross first learned his sidearm delivery, he watched a lot of hitting videos. Because he uses more lower-half load than a conventional pitching delivery, his process more closely resembles a hitter’s. Dissecting those hitting videos became a valuable tool, helping him tap into his lower half more while using his hips and core to get down the mound and keep his arm path consistent. “I’d see how guys would stay on their back legs and drive through,” Effross told the Tribune. “Obviously pitchers use their lower half really well regardless, but for me, that was probably the biggest adjustment, learning how to use that in a completely different way.” Nearly three years ago, during the Double-A Tennessee All-Star break, Effross committed to the new sidearm delivery in hopes of changing his career trajectory. Effross, 28, has quickly become a versatile bullpen option for manager David Ross. Effross leads the Cubs with 19 appearances, owning a 2.04 ERA, … [Read more...] about How sidearm reliever Scott Effross developed into a weapon for the Chicago Cubs: ‘He’s not fazed by the moment’
