Pennsylvania’s democracy is at a critical juncture. Weaknesses in the security of our elections present a threat both to our electoral outcomes and to public faith and trust in government of, by, and for the people. We have been fortunate thus far to avoid such an assault on our democracy.Recognizing the gravity of what is at stake, The Blue Ribbon Commission on Pennsylvania’s Election Security (which we co-chair) endeavored to research and analyze the security of the Commonwealth’s election architecture. The commission’s just-released report, which documents those efforts and offers actionable and achievable solutions, provides a blueprint for how Pennsylvania’s leaders can do what is needed to protect our elections. We launched the commission to bring together experts and leaders from across the state, of all political stripes, with the clear goal of improving Pennsylvania’s election security before it is too late. Tech & Science Hacking Cybersecurity Raspite American companies working in the electric utility sector are currently under threat from a hacking group that cybersecurity experts have codenamed RASPITE. Dragos, Inc., a company that specializes in critical infrastructure attacks, disclosed on Thursday that the collective is known to target entities across the U.S., Middle East, Europe, and East Asia. But it noted that intrusions on electric utility companies are limited to America, for now. The group—which has been active since last year—uses booby-trapped websites in an attempt to steal Windows usernames and passwords. The ultimate aim, Dragos researchers believe, is to gain remote access to a victim’s machine. Luckily, the hackers have not demonstrated they have the capability to compromise Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and cause blackouts. “The activity group is targeting electric utilities, but there is no current indication the group has the … [Read more...] about U.S. Electric Grids Under Threat from ‘Raspite’ Hacking Group Cyberattacks
Tech & Science Russia Hacking Cyber-Espionage Hackers working for a state-sponsored cyber-espionage unit with alleged links to Russia could have caused electricity blackouts in the U.S. last year after gaining access to some utility control rooms, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official disclosed this week. Jonathan Homer, chief of industrial control system analysis at the agency, said that hackers “got to the point where they could have thrown switches” and mess with power flows, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news from a federal briefing on Monday. Homer said there had been “hundreds of victims” since the attacks began in 2016, but they have not been named. It remains unclear to what extent they were compromised. The cyberattack, he warned, may be ongoing. But experts in the national infrastructure field this week remained skeptical of his claims, stressing that language used in such incidents is … [Read more...] about Russian Hackers ‘Could Have Caused Electricity Blackouts’ in the U.S.
