After OT win over Baylor, Oklahoma waits to hear about College Football Playoff
ARLINGTON, Texas — No. 6 Oklahoma has done all it can, winning a fifth Big 12 title in a row with another close win over No. 8 Baylor. Now the Sooners wait to see if they are going to get back in the College Football Playoff. That is up to the selection committee. “I hope they see the Big 12 champions. They’ve got a job to do, I get that,“ coach Lincoln Riley said after Oklahoma’s 30-23 overtime win Saturday. “We’ve had a job to do as a team, which was continuing to improve through the year, trust the things that we could and ultimately win the Big 12 championship,” he said. “We’ve done that.” Rhamondre Stevenson had a 5-yard touchdown run in overtime, and then freshman Jacob Zeno — whose two long passes in the fourth quarter helped tie the score — was under constant pressure when the Bears got their last chance. A day after No. 5 Utah lost in the Pac-12 championship game, and before No. 4 Georgia took on … [Read more...] about After OT win over Baylor, Oklahoma waits to hear about College Football Playoff
Cal stays in the Bay, will play Illinois in Redbox Bowl
Cal will have a decided homefield advantage for its bowl game at the end of this month. The Bears learned Sunday they will play Illinois in the Redbox Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Dec. 30. Cal finished 7-5 this season, 4-5 in the Pac-12. The Illini were 6-6 overall, 4-5 in the Big Ten. Cal and Illinois last played each other in 2005. The Illini have won seven of the 10 games between the two, but Cal has won the last two (’05 and ‘03) and three of the last five. This will be the second season in a row that coach Justin Wilcox has guided the Bears to a bowl game. Cal hadn’t done that in a decade after having played in seven consecutive under Jeff Tedford from 2003-09. Cal will also be trying to win its eighth game of the season; the last time it had that many was 2015 — when it last won a bowl game, beating Air Force 55-36 in the Armed Forces Bowl. For most of the season, an eighth win — let alone a bowl berth — seemed tenuous at best … [Read more...] about Cal stays in the Bay, will play Illinois in Redbox Bowl
Capital murder defendant wants declaration of innocence
WACO, Texas (AP) — During his 26 years in prison, Richard Bryan Kussmaul heard scraps of news from the world he left behind: the death of his brother from cancer, followed by the deaths of his parents and the incarceration of his son. Meanwhile, he sewed prison clothes and found a faith that would sustain him through the battle of his life: proving he was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and double murder. When he was released on bond this spring after winning a new trial based on DNA evidence, he walked into an unfamiliar world of smartphones and new fast-food joints, owning nothing more than a shirt and a pair of pants. Now he has found a job, moved in with his disabled sister in Moody and rekindled his relationship with his son’s mother. But his battle continues as he tries to remove the last lingering doubts about his innocence, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported. The McLennan County District Attorney’s Office dismissed the capital murder charge against … [Read more...] about Capital murder defendant wants declaration of innocence

LOS ANGELES, CA — Another storm will strike the Southland early Wednesday, creating flood risks throughout the region, according to forecasters. However, the weather system is not expected to be as cold or wet as last week's rain storm. The fast moving cold front will bring a period of heavy rain Wednesday that is expected to create a risk of flash floods. A flood watch will go into effect for all of Orange County Wednesday morning. In L.A. County, the rain will start early Wednesday and last through Wednesday night, said NWS meteorologist Curt Kaplan. About a half-inch to an inch-and-a-half of rain is expected, Certain areas including the San Gabriel Mountains could see as much as three inches of rain, forecasters said. The snow level is not expected to reach as low as it did lasting week, shutting down holiday travel through the Grapevine. Mountain communities last week saw up to four feet of snow, and hundreds were snowed in up in Big Bear.
