In a new interview with "Today," the Olympic athlete opened up about his struggle with depression and how he hit an all-time low in October of 2014 after he was arrested for his second DUI. "For me, I was so down on myself, I didn't have any self-love, quite honestly I didn't want to be alive," Phelps said. "It was a really, really crazy time." Retired Celtics forward Paul Pierce says he battled depression for a year after he was stabbed 11 times at a Boston nightclub in 2000. “The only thing that saved me was basketball,” Pierce told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan. The 2000 incident required emergency surgery to repair a collapsed lung before the start of Pierce’s third NBA season. The forward recovered to play all 82 games that year, averaging 25.3 points per game, but he said he continued to privately struggle. Although the Celtics encouraged him to seek counseling, Pierce opted to manage his anxiety on his own, saying he “didn’t want anybody else in [his] business.” “We can offer all the services in the world,” Celtics general manager Danny Ainge told MacMullan. “But if they won’t use them, we can’t help them. Former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce "battled depression" for the year after getting stabbed in 2000, he told ESPN's Jackie MacMullan. "I should have opened up earlier than I did," Pierce told MacMullan. "It was eating me alive." MacMullan's full piece addressed various NBA players' personal experiences with mental health struggles. Many around the league, led by Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers and DeMar DeRozan of the San Antonio Spurs, have opened up before about mental health issues they've gone through. Others, like Josh Huestis, formerly of the Oklahoma City Thunder, have followed with personal, written accounts of their struggles. Smith, who retired after the 2016 season and now works as an analyst for the NFL Network, told NFL.com that despite making five Pro Bowls and being selected All-Pro twice he "routinely felt trapped, inferior and alone" and often asked himself "what's wrong with me?" The 39-year-old Smith said by his final season with Carolina in 2013 he was so overwhelmed he didn't know how to handle his emotions and "was a cynic of everything and everyone."
